Let me get this out of the way ... I am sick to death of Asian horror having to do with ghosts with long black hair. It's been done to death already via cursed videotapes, haunted houses, anything that Andrew Kasch likes, etc. Yet, that doesn't stop filmmakers from exhausting every conceivable scenario to get their lookalike spook out there. The latest vehicle? A haunted wig. That's right, a hairpiece from hell. You know, as a goof this could have actually been entertaining in the silliest of ways, but that wasn't to be. Why, you ask? Because of its cancerous subplot. Let me explain ...
Sisters at times can go through some serious stuff, and our protagonists here have their hands full. One has lost her voice in a horrible car accident, and the other is dying of cancer. As a means to lift her sibling's spirits, Ms. Silent gives Ms. Dying a wig to cover her hairless misery dome. As if the poor chick didn't have enough problems, once the wig is on her head, the inhabiting spook starts showing her grisly stuff that eventually leads to all manner of violence. Roll credits.
Here's the thing ... cancer and entertainment? They don't mix. The Wig is a depressing and plodding little film that is an absolutely excruciating chore to sit through. Sure there's a couple of cool ghost gags thrown in here and there, mostly having to do with killer hair choking people to death, but the overall subject matter and fatal tone of the film will leave you wishing that it was over almost from its opening minutes. In fact, I cannot even imagine whom this movie is for. Cancer patients who love horror? Wash women who thrive on watching the misery of others? People who go to funerals to share in the grief of complete strangers? Whatever the case, it certainly wasn't for me. There's enough real life shit going on to bring a person down. We don't need our DVD players chiming in.
In terms of extras there are two making-of and behind-the-scenes featurettes that clock in at about a half an hour combined and a ten-minute look at the movie's special effects. During one of them director Won Shin-Yun states that "The Wig is a sad horror film". You have got that right, buddy. In more ways than one.
