Picture if you will waking up in a world gone mad. Actually, I guess we all do that every day. Okay, bad analogy! Picture playing a videogame in which the main character wakes up in a world gone mad. Then picture said character realizing that he has ESP abilities that let you/him torture your enemies in some truly devilish ways, all while righting this videogame world’s wrongs! Sound like fun? It should! As a matter of fact, Midway Home Entertainment’s newest title, PSI-OPS: The Mindgate Conspiracy, will literally blow your mind.
Coming off their latest genre masterpiece, The Suffering, Midway once again delivers a truly visceral experience in its latest offering. True, this experience is a bit more sci-fi than horror, but there’s enough here to keep ANY gorehound horror buff happy for hours! At the push of a button you can:
-Slam your enemies against walls until they fall limp
-Levitate them in one spot, and while they’re floating, shoot the holy hell out of them
-Crush them by dropping heavy objects on them
-Suck their psychic energies until their heads explode off their shoulders a la Scanners (a truly nice touch
The sky, or your imagination, is THE LIMIT when it comes to dispatching baddies! I swear I spent about 25 minutes just slamming this one sap from one wall to the other over and over again! It’s the little things in life, ya know?!
All of this mayhem is all fine and good but would be NOTHING without tight gameplay and a great storyline, which is where Psi-Ops really shines. The voice acting is top notch, the graphics and sound rock hard (especially if you’re equipped with a Dolby Digital 5.1 setup), and the storyline sucks you in from the beginning and will not let you go. There are twists and turns aplenty in this baby and more than enough reasons to play through it again once the end credits have rolled!
Midway once again proves that they are well on their way to becoming the adult gamer’s best friend. Having realized that the gamers of yesteryear are older, they seem to be consistently blessing us with adult oriented action that suits our “grown up” needs just fine. There are no pretty pink clouds or mushroom chasing fat men here. Instead we have guns, gore, zombies, monsters, and mayhem.
Call me crazy, but I’d rather wake up in the Psi-Ops world any day over our own. I can think of plenty of people whose heads would look great exploding at my sheer whim!
