The Louisiana swampland holds a great deal of mystery. Magic and the supernatural seem to be everyday, or at least well known, among the bayou waters. And for all its shrouded beauty, it also holds terror and incomprehensible evil, especially for those that think they can escape their own heritage.
Family Inheritance is, at its core, a story about rediscovering who and what the lead characters are. While such stories are often found in the romance or drama sections of your local bookstore, this one is unabashedly horror with deliciously written imagery that will have the reader losing track of time and flipping pages like a person possessed. So much attention is paid to detail by LeBlanc, herself a Louisiana native, that one can hear the creak of the sway-back porch on the bayou, feel the tension in the air, smell the acrid stench of death. She paints a very vivid picture, one that keeps the reader entranced with its terrible beauty.
Jessica LeJeune left Louisiana to follow her career. Now living in Tennessee with her husband and son, it seems all her hard work is finally paying off; but she can’t shake the feeling that the anvil is going to drop. It does, in the form of powerful messages hinting at her own destiny – both a curse and blessing that has been passed to her. She travels back to her childhood home to face her own past in an abusive home to try to save her brother, Todd, from being claimed by demonic madness.
From the moment the reader meets her, Jessica LeJeune is richly developed, giving the reader a flesh and bone guide to follow instead of just a snapshot. Likewise, in the character of Eli in the deep swampland we can see a force to be reckoned with. It is not just the power of a healer that makes him special; it is his own confusion over his destiny as well as his struggle against the voodoo spirit of madness, Maikana.
What unfolds before the reader is an engrossing – at times terrifying – and altogether enjoyable story that is richly woven and told with passion. Deborah Leblanc holds the readers’ attention and never once drops it.
