Elvira’s Movie Macabre Double DiscsStarring Cassandra Peterson

Guess what, ghouls and gals? This week, the one and only Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, is releasing two brand-spanking new DVD collections featuring four classic horror films that herald in her return to television sets everywhere. On June 14th, two separate Elvira’s Movie Macabre home releases are available and all I can say that Cassandra Peterson has never been funnier and more on top of her game than she is during this incarnation of the series that put the “Horror Hostess with the Mostess” on the map back in the 80s.

The first disc of Elvira’s Movie Macabre features all sorts of zombie goodness with Night of the Living Dead and I Eat Your Skin. On this disc, we find Elvira facing unemployment gearing up to get back into the horror hosting business and what better film to resurrect her career than George A. Romero’s classic zombie film? With I Eat Your Skin, Elvira gets into the diet business (so to speak) with not only the “I Eat Your Skin Diet” but also starts hocking “Zombatrim” pills. Honestly, the movie itself was kind of a bore but Elvira certainly made the movie watching experience feel worthwhile.

The second release of Elvira’s Movie Macabre features our beloved Mistress of the Dark getting bored with The Satanic Rites of Dracula (which I actually found a little more interesting that I think our hostess did) and keeping audiences entertained while she tends to some chores. The second film featured on this disc is The Werewolf of Washington which may actually be Elvira’s best presentation in her new series to date. Here, Peterson drops her hostess persona and transforms herself into “Sarah Impalin” which, on a hilarity level, is on par with Tina Fey’s “Saturday Night Live” impressions and proves that Peterson is clearly no one-trick pony as Elvira.

In terms of special features, both discs of Elvira’s Movie Macabre are pretty light on the extras but it didn’t really bother me since I wasn’t expecting a whole lot of supplemental material coming from a syndicated television series. On the Night of the Living Dead/I Eat Your Skin double feature, we get some behind-the-scenes looks at the making of Elvira’s Movie Macabre, a photo shoot with Peterson and photographer Christopher Ameruso, a “Mistress of the Dark” music video (with some behind-the-scenes moments from making the video) and just some sneak previews of upcoming Elvira installments.

For the second disc, we get some repeated material with the photo shoot and music video extras again but are also treated to a very special promotional video by the Mistress of the Dark herself called “I’m Not a Witch” that playfully tries to explain to newcomers that just because she dresses in all black, our favorite horror hostess is not keen on bubbling cauldrons or riding on brooms.

Overall, Elvira’s Movie Macabre is a must-own for old school genre fans. The “Queen of Halloween” proves that even though she had been out of the hosting business for quite some time, she’s still got the chops to keep viewers entertained- even when the movie isn’t all that entertaining itself.
