Hell, I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve just about washed my greasy mitts with the entire zombie fad – so overblown, extremely bleached out, and lacking some real creativity to the storylines…so why the hell not throw in some former Presidents to the mix? Oddly enough, I found myself fairly entertained with David Zuckerman’s latest, Presidents Day – what is this world coming to?

Set against the backdrop of a remote cabin in the woods (well, they ARE the place to party, aren’t they) – a group of teen friends smack dab in the middle of a fiesta for the ages manage to evoke a very old curse, and the reanimated bodies of former Potuses return from the grave and commence a little hacking and slashing, all in the name of the good old U.S. of A. Hell, I know I wouldn’t have it any other way, cause it’s the right thing to do – American born, American dead…American zombified, I guess. So, with the likes of Washington, Nixon, Taft and a few other undead chiefs on the rampage, it becomes clear that this little party has become a serious mistake…I mean, what usually goes wrong when you have a drunken bash in a secluded, woodsy cabin? Don’t answer that question, as it truly begs no response – funny thing here is, the film actually uses different horror tropes to fuel the story, and making fun of skewered plotlines and instances from other movies is what gives this flick a bit of a boost in the right direction.

The characters are all assembly-lined like your usually stereotyped high-school crowd (the jock, the nerd, the princess), and while the performances are intently goofy and hammish, they’re meant to be that way, and it’s sincerely amusing to watch this bunch get sliced to pieces (in some imaginative ways, I might add). While the film did have its share of bright spots, there were some dim notes to make light of (see what I did there) – the true reason for the Presidents reborn-rage was never really delved into, besides the fact that an ages-old curse brought them back…so why attack a bunch of goons in the woods? A few other minor bugs on the windshield of this vehicle, but with a premise such as this, were you really expecting Gone With The Wind or On Golden Pond? Overall, this is a straight-up midnight watch, best suited for those who fell asleep in history class back in the day and need a refresher course on our founding fathers – enjoy!
