‘What You Wish For’ Trailer Is Cooking Up Something Dark and Delicious

If you have a taste for culinary horror, then Nicholas Tomnay’s new film What You Wish For should skyrocket to the top of your watchlist for 2024. This is Tomnay’s first film in 13 years, with his previous being The Perfect Host, starring David Hyde Pierce. And he’s back with a darkly funny, visually stunning, and very entertaining look at wealth, desperation, and delicious food.

In the film:

Ryan (Nick Stahl) is a talented, down-on-his-luck chef with crushing gambling problems. Circumstances being what they are, he leaves town in a hurry for the safe haven of an unnamed Latin American country where his friend Jack (Brian Groh), a more prestigious chef with his own unique troubles, welcomes him into his home. Ryan has no idea how Jack’s able to afford his extravagant lifestyle cooking for the elite in paradise; he doesn’t want to feel envious, yet he can’t help but want this life for himself as well. Soon, a grim twist of fate will give that to him. Ryan assumes his friend’s identity and soon discovers just what Jack’s been doing to maintain the lifestyle he so desperately craved.

In her review of the film from Fantastic Fest 2024, Dread Central’s Mary Beth McAndrews wrote,

“What You Wish For will undoubtedly be compared to Mark Rylod’s 2022 food horror The Menu. While Rylod’s film boasts a more star-studded cast, Tomnay’s What You Wish For boasts a much darker story that reveals the horrors capable by the wealthy rather than poking fun at them. While certain beats of What You Wish For may feel familiar, Tomnay is never afraid to go even darker to the point of the absurd, which sets this apart from recent culinary horror films like The Menu and Fresh. It’s simply delicious.

Nick Stahl turns in an incredible performance as the empathetic dirtbag chef that we’ve all fallen in love with at least once in our young lives. But opposite Stahl is an equally phenomenal performance from Tamsin Topolski as a woman trying to girlboss but keeps running into increasingly bizarre circumstances because of Stahl. It’s a tense and entertaining dynamic, supported by performances from Randy Vasquez, Penelope Mitchell, Juan Carlos Messier, and Brian Groh.

What You Wish For comes to theaters and VOD on May 31, 2024.
