I’ve been having a lot of fun making these daily horror recommendations, and it’s gotten me to revisit some of my favorite horror games I haven’t played in a while. But today is a little different, and it’s a game developed by a huge studio that not many people have played. I only played it through for the first time about two years ago and haven’t touched the other games under its umbrella. While it is not readily available outside of the PlayStation ecosystem, I’m excited to talk about today’s game. Siren!
Siren is another stealth-focused survival horror game and was developed by Japan Studio, known for Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Patapon, Gravity Rush, and Astro’s Playroom. The list goes on and on, and frankly, I’m surprised we haven’t seen anything Siren related for a long time unless you count the nod in Astro’s Playroom.
The story of Siren is that you play as ten different survivors trying to flee this small rural town in Japan after this earthquake-like disaster. While the main goal is escaping, some survivors are more curious. They want to find out exactly what happened as this disease makes its way around the town, turning the water into “red water” and causing people to turn into what is basically invincible rage-filled people that bleed from the eyes.
There is this system in Siren that doing certain things as one survivor will cause these side objectives to appear for other survivors. Just like in Eternal Darkness, the story here is told out of chronological order, but this thing called the Link Navigator helps you keep track of where things fall timeline-wise. There is a total focus on stealth here, too. You’ll have to manage stamina when turning your flashlight off to try not to call attention to yourself. Because even if you do take down an enemy, they will get revived after a short time, but that all ties into the story.
