Dinner for Fiends: Pretty Damned Good Horror Podcast

At the outset of this edition of Dinner for Fiends, I joked that I had a feeling this was going to be a pretty damn good horror podcast. You can decide whether or not that’s the case, but let me assure you the recording of this edition was a living nightmare.

Uncle Creepy, Matt Fini, Andrew Kasch, and yours truly (Foywonder) got together to record a Dinner for Fiends without Buz and… Let’s just say we never truly realized how much he was the glue that held this whole thing together from a technical standpoint. However long this episode runs, the recording of it was more than twice that. The editing of this show was not that much different from the stitching of Leatherface’s mask. Skype experienced a cornucopia of technical difficulties constantly messing up our audio, disconnecting us, and, thus, interrupting the recording. Then my laptop began overheating and… Let’s just say you’ll detect increasing levels of exasperation in our voice once you get past the 10-minute mark when the fun began.

The Collection, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Mama, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, and “American Horror Story: Asylum” are our main topics. By the last half hour, after the 4,000th technical difficulty, we just start shooting the breeze about whatever loosely related topic we felt like as we awaited yet another meltdown.

Our pain is your pleasure.

At long, long, long, long, long, long, long last… Dinner for Fiends has returned with a two-hour epic-sized edition with a lot of ground to cover jam-packed with spoiler-riffic discussions of the last three months of horror movie and television and all the sniping and snarking you love or hate or love to hate.

Yeah, we’re really late with this show. But we all have good excuses. Fini and I both got hit with hurricanes in the time since the last show. Uncle Creepy’s appendix exploded and nearly killed him. Buz and Andrew, well, they don’t really have any excuses. Since we haven’t done one since September, we have a whole lot of ground to cover. How much ground? Here are just a few of the topics we either briefly touch upon or discuss in-depth (i.e., heavy spoilers):

Bait 3D
Resident Evil: Retribution 3D
Dredd 3D
House at the End of the Street
Hotel Transylvania
Frankenweenie
Sinister
Smiley
Beyond the Black Rainbow
Paranormal Activity 4
Silent Hill: Revelations 3D
Among Friends
The Bay
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

Plus, the new seasons of “The Walking Dead”, “Supernatural”, and “American Horror Story” are debated.

A super-sized edition of Dinner For Fiends that is as spirited as it is overdue, particularly when we get to Paranormal Activity 4 and… well… you’ll just have to listen for yourself.

Going into this edition of Dinner for Fiends, we were all thinking there wouldn’t be much territory to cover. Turns out there was actually much more to talk about than we expected. Of course all conversations were sandwiched between the usual nonsense.

On the menu today... The Possession, The Apparition, V/H/S, Cosmopolis, Total Recall, Juan of the Dead, Detention, YellowBrickRoad, Premium Rush, The Oogieloves, and the misadventures of a mystery movie shopper, just to name a few of topics we discuss.

Now the bad news… You ever been working on something and just get the sense that the vibe is all wrong? That’s how we were throughout this entire recording. By the end we were all convinced that this episode is going to go down in history as one of the worst ever. Buz was in a bad mood from the beginning and just seemed to be trolling the rest of us at times. Matt Fini was his usual mellow self though still quite bitter about the space baby. Andrew Kasch actually managed to stick around for most of the show but had little to contribute a lot of the time since he hadn’t seen anything but the newest Cronenberg flick that isn’t even horror. Me, I just wanted my money back from Uncle Creepy after he talked me into seeing The Apparition: better believe that got contentious.

So in addition to the sniping and bad mojo, there were also numerous technical issues (most of which have probably been edited out) and an overwhelming sense the whole show was going down in flames like the Hindenburg. Because we were so sure this Dinner for Fiends came out bad, I’m convinced it’s going to be one that you the listeners end up enjoying immensely. It just seems to work out that way.

Enjoy! Hopefully. And don't worry, we know this one sucked so we're recording another this week to make up for it! Sorry for the delay. It's as if all the forces in the universe conspired to not bring you guys this show. But here it is... for better or worse.

Dinner for Fiends: Wrath of the Space Baby

If you like Dinner for Fiends episodes that consist mostly of us jabbering about nothing of great importance, then this nearly two-hour installment is going to be music to your ears.

Myself, Uncle Creepy, Matt Fini, Buz, and (for about a half-hour) Andrew Kasch have returned for a Dinner for Fiends that might leave you with indigestion of the mind.

Everything starts off fine as we discuss in spoiler-y details the season finale of “The Walking Dead”. That’s when I make the grave mistake of bringing up the outrageous online meltdowns people are having over the ending to the video game Mass Effect 3, and suddenly the show turns into a Matt Fini therapy session. You’ll hear in painstaking detail why this game broke Fini’s heart and left him a bitter, broken shell of a man.

Then the technical difficulties begin as Space Baby tries desperately to remind me why I continue to be no fan of Skype.

But on the plus side, I think this might be the first DFF in ages that is 100% rape-free.

From there the Amanda Seyfried serial killer flop Gone gets spoiled, as does the Halle Berry shark dud Dark Tide, even more so the indie chiller ATM. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance gets burned as well. You’ll also hear our thoughts on the trailers for Dark Shadows and Prometheus. We’ll top it off with some viewer mail for dessert.

Dinner is served.

Editor's Note
What you're about to listen to came within a hair of being a lost episode. For whatever reason we were riddled with technical difficulties, which led to Buz nearly killing himself cutting together the original recording with Foy's back-up recording. Yes, the Foywonder saved the day. It took over a week but Buz managed to Frankenstein it together for you. Yes, you will hear the occasional weirdness and interference. <itunes:summary>If you like Dinner for Fiends episodes that consist mostly of us jabbering about nothing of great importance, then this nearly two-hour installment is going to be music to your ears.

Uncle Creepy, Buz, Matt Fini, and yours truly spend a considerable amount of time debating the merits of the Fright Night remake, featuring the horrifying truth about Creepy’s cinematic hair fetish and how it affects his reaction to the movies he watches, interrupted briefly by a deranged screaming tirade regarding the Conan the Barbarian remake.

Then the Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark remake gets served up on a silver platter, followed by a heaping helping of Shark Night cheesiness, then a quick spoiler-filled recapping of the non-events that comprised Apollo 18, and finally for desert we sink our teeth into the cowpie that was Creature.

Plus all the sidetracking zany discussions you’ve come to expect when we start rambling inanely.

As always, beware of major spoilers when discussing all of these offerings, even more so than usual since judging by the box office profits of these films, none of you saw any of them.

Dinner for Fiends is back for what may be its final installment of the year. There’s not a whole lot of horror going on at the movies of late – unless you count how much money the latest Twilight sequel has made – so in addition to Breaking Dawn we’re mostly talking quality horror on TV today.

If you’re amongst the listeners who experience spastic rage every single time the topic of Twilight is discussed, you might as well fast forward past the first 15-20 minutes of this show because busting Breaking Dawn’s balls is all we do during that time. But if you want to hear about Brazilian vampire honeymoon island love nests, Bella’s love of rough sex, werewolves falling in love with babies, and vampire fang c-sections, then the opening portion of this program is for you.

From there we segue into televised horror. You’ll hear much man love for “Supernatural”, Buz’s disdain for the characters on “The Walking Dead”, and then mixed reactions regarding the current seasons of “Dexter” and “American Horror Story”.

If that’s not enough for you, you’ll also hear viewer mail, possibly hear Uncle Creepy peeing, and experience Buz’s raw naked terror at the mysterious sound of something that may or may not have been a vacuum cleaner.

Join myself, Uncle Creepy, Andrew Kasch, Matt Fini, and Buz “Danger is my middle name so long as it doesn’t involve things that make mechanical suctioning sounds in which case I quiver with fear” Wallick for another feature-length Dinner for Fiends smorgasbord.

Then ... the bird arrives, Creepy forgets we’re even still recording, and it all turns into a weirdly R-rated retelling of Edgar Allen Poe’s classic short story.

Then, after a few short minutes of Batman: Arkham City discussion, Andrew Kasch gets swallowed in the abyss and our esteemed editor makes his presence known from his own Halloween black hole filled with piss and vinegar.

Then ... the bird arrives, Creepy forgets we’re even still recording, and it all turns into a weirdly R-rated retelling of Edgar Allen Poe’s classic short story.

We post this half-hour audio special of whatever the hell it is strictly for historical purposes. Do you dare listen?

Fuck the raven, nevermore!</itunes:summary>

The Rapture didn’t happen, but we did finally record a new Dinner for Fiends. An uproarious, epic-sized edition that Uncle Creepy feels may be one of the best ever. We’ll let you decide on that.

This edition opens with me ranting about Dylan Dog: Dead of Night and BloodRayne: The Third Reich and ends with me rewriting Dr. Seuss, so that alone should tell you some of what to expect. From there we’ll voice differing opinions on the merits of Scream 4 and Insidious. Somewhere in there we acknowledge the existence of Priest. You’ll hear the sad tale of the agony experienced watching the new Hellraiser sequel and how the latest Children of the Corn sequel isn’t that bad, possibly because it has next to nothing to do with children or corn. Plus there's talk of Troll Hunter, Stake Land, The Skin I Live In, “Dexter”, the season finale of “Supernatural”, and some LA Noire love along with the return of viewer mail – deeply confusing viewer mail.

This is all in addition to the usual ball-busting we give each other. Matt Fini accepts ribbing for his Halloween: Curse of Michael Myers review but makes no apologies for his love of the Howling sequels. I struggle to keep my Dracula “thousands” straight, and Buz potentially gets murdered by angry Mexicans. And who doesn’t want to hear tales of Uncle Creepy and Doug Bradley drunkenly exchanging gay sex Hellraiser jokes?

This show is so jam-packed from start to finish I can’t even begin to list it all. Just listen before we send John Lithgow to your house to bathe you.

Ring the dinner bell because Dinner For Fiends is back for a jam-packed feature length episode filled with everything from thoughtful to heated discussion. An often rowdy installment in which we debate and discuss ten different films, bust each other's chops whenever possible, and partake in one of the longest meditations on the merits of baby rape in podcast history.

Actually, the baby rape has to do with a fairly lengthy debate as too whether A Serbian Film goes to far. What? You didn't think we would actually advocate raping babies? Hey, it may be called Dinner for Fiends but we're not that fiendish.

Beware spoilers ahoy as Uncle Creepy, Matt Fini, Andrew Kasch, Foywonder, and Buz as we engage in boisterous discussion about the craziness of Anthony Hopkins in The Rite, the craptacular Season of the Witch, the wretchedness of The Roommate and Beastly, the strangeness of Rubber, the awesomeness of I Saw the Devil, the pros and cons of Battle: Los Angeles, and the unheralded unintentional comic masterpiece that is Red Riding Hood.

Plus, as special bonus attraction, Uncle Creepy and Matt Fini whip out their knives and duel to the death over whether Drive Angry 3D was fantastic or utter garbage. Two men enter. Two men leave. Kind of a letdown now that I think about it.

There's so much more packed into this overstuffed 90-minute episode. Grab your spork, put on you bib, and join us at the dinner table for a Dinner For Fiends smorgasbord.

More love for Piranha 3D.

More hate for the Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

Are psychological thrillers truly horror films?

Reasons the horror genre gets such a bad rap.

The greatness and madness of Werner Herzog and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

How much better horror programming on television has become of late.

"I thought Human Centipede was a SyFy movie about a guy with a hundred legs!"

Somehow AJ Bowen and I get into a heated debate over Tron: Legacy that I'm still not sure how it happened or why other than I was in a cranky moood and that movie really sucks.

In addition to a quite rambunctious discussion over several of this summer's high profile genre offerings, on this high energy installment one of our very own chimes in pulled over on the side of the road by order of police due to imminent threat of a tornado warning. But if one staff member is under threat of tornadic doom then why is it another staff member keeps mysteriously vanishing from the show?

On this edition of Dinner For Fiends it would seem that nobody agreed on anything other than we all loved Inception and believe me to be a fool for having paid good money to watch the new Twilight movie. But if I hadn't I wouldn't be able to bring you a very special in-depth report covering the goings-on of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. And if vampire-werewolf emo love triangles aren't your thing then perhaps red hot mutant sex is. We'll spend a few minutes discussing Splice before moving on to a lengthy, spoiler-filled debate over the merits of Predators.

There's more, including viewer mail from Mexico that causes us to pause to contemplate why is it Mexican horror fans have it in for Buz, and again, the looming possibility that a tornado will whisk one of our own away to the land of Oz.

Did you miss us? We have returned after a lengthy hiatus brought on by scheduling conflicts and a technical meltdown that erased the last Dinner For Fiends, and what a loaded program we have for you! Finally, the first DFF of 2010, and being that we're nearly three months into the new year, that means there is a lot of ground to cover and still find time for the usual off-topic nonsense.

Andrew and Buz couldn't make it so this edition should prove quite popular in Mexico. Instead you can smell what Ben Rock is cooking; the Alien Raiders filmmaker joins us for this edition. The always salty Uncle Creepy, Matt "Can we get this over with because 'Lost' is on in an hour?" Fini, and yours truly, the Foywonder, round out the roundtable of fiends.

Expect spoiler-filled discussions of Daybreakers, The Wolf Man, Legion, The Crazies, and especially Shutter Island. There's also extreme wackiness, such as a shockingly lengthy opening discussion about the greatness of "Ultra Galaxy Monster Battle", nearly forgotten about 1980's genre flicks that deserve a DVD revival, more upcoming Asylum insanity, Uncle Creepy cockblocking me out of another potentially great Legion rant, Dead Snow despair, Sam Worthington's total lack of charisma, ribbing each other over questionable movies likes, and so much more.

<itunes:summary>Did you miss us?

Why am I writing an intro article for a new edition of Dinner For Fiends when I could be playing Left 4 Dead 2? For that matter, why did we waste an hour recording a new Dinner For Fiends when we should have been playing Left 4 Dead 2? Well, we did. So if you're not playing Left 4 Dead 2 and can fit this podcast into your schedule, then join Uncle Creepy, Foywonder, Andrew Kasch, and Matt Fini as we talk about the most recent horrifying offerings.

In this edition:

• An opening tirade by yours truly
• Uncle Creepy briefly tells us about The Box since he was the only one of us to see it
• Uncle Creepy briefly tells us about The Fourth Kind since he was again the only one to see it
• Everyone actually saw Saw IV
• Continued amazement at the runaway blockbuster that is Paranormal Activity
• Creepy and I extol the virtues of the gloriously ludicrous 2012
• Andrew Kasch talks movies he saw at AFM, including Rec 2 and a genuinely good Uwe Boll film
• The greatness of Left 4 Dead 2 and the pure joy of setting Uncle Creepy on fire
• ABSOLUTELY NO TWILIGHT/NEW MOON DISCUSSION WHATSOEVER!!!

There's no Buz on this DFF, so expect downloads of the show in Mexico to increase dramatically.

So put down your chainsaws and your grenade launchers and listen to Dinner For Fiends: Hits and Misses Part 2 - Countdown to Armageddon, before we send a Jockey to your house to hop on your head and force you to listen.

<itunes:summary>Myself, Creepy, Foy, Kasch and the luscious Morgan gathered to discuss just what went wrong with Twilight, and Morgan knows better than all of us cause she’s read the books!
