Platinum Studios' Meet the Haunteds Headed to the Big ScreenHere at Dread Central we’re always on the lookout for cool sounding projects that also provide a bit of social commentary, and the upcoming Meet the Haunteds comic adaptation looks to fit the bill on both counts.

From the Press Release:
Steve Carr and Rumpus Entertainment and Platinum Studios, Inc., one of the largest comic books rights houses that controls an international library of more than 5,600 comic book characters, have partnered to bring Platinum Studios’ graphic novel ‘Meet the Haunteds’ to the big screen.

‘Meet the Haunteds’ tells the story of a white family that moves into a house haunted by black ghosts that have been there since the 1970s. The ‘Meet the Haunteds’ graphic novel is scheduled to be published in 2011.

Carr and his partner Jason Taragan will produce the film with Platinum Studios’ Chairman and CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg. Former Universal Pictures senior executive Randy Greenberg of The Greenberg Group, who negotiated the deal, would be an executive producer.

“‘Meet the Haunteds’ is a perfect set-up for social commentary on everything from race issues to family problems,” said Carr. “This is another wonderful property from Platinum Studios, which is turning itself into the go-to independent comic book company.”

Carr directed the box office hits ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop,’ ‘Daddy Day Care,’ and ‘Next Friday.’

“Meet the Haunteds” is just one original property that hails from Platinum Studios’ large multi-universe library. While Marvel was recently acquired by Disney for $4 billion, and DC Comics is owned by Warner Bros., Platinum Studios remains independent of major entertainment studio affiliation.

According to the Platinum Studios website, back in October of 2005 NBC Universal Television Studio optioned rights to the graphic novel by Chris Wichtendah to develop into a half-hour scripted comedy for NBC, but obviously that never panned out. At that time executive producer Chris Conti said, “(It won’t be) just about black and white issues, (but also) upper-class vs. lower-class and white collar vs. blue collar. … I want to make you think and make you laugh.” Hopefully those themes will carry over to the theatrical version as well.
