Literary Legend Peter Straub Has Passed Away

Iconic author, horror hero and literary legend Peter Straub passed away at the age of 79 on September 4th, 2022. Straub is a household name in the landscape of horror literature, having written scary classics like Ghost Story and Julia. He is also known for his historic collaborations with Stephen King. The authors co-wrote The Talisman in 1984 as well as its follow-up Black House in 2001.

King took to Twitter yesterday to share the news of Straub’s passing, saying “It’s a sad day because my good friend and amazingly talented colleague and collaborator, Peter Straub, has passed away.” The Talisman, their most famous literary team-up, is now being adapted into a Netflix series.

Straub was born on March 2nd, 1943 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began his career by publishing two collections of poetry in 1972 before releasing Marriages, his debut novel, in 1973. Before the decade was over Straub made the shift to horror fiction with Ghost Story. Other famous titles of his include The Hellfire Club, Floating Dragon and The Ghost Village.

An accomplished and decorated writer, Straub has won four World Fantasy Awards, ten Bram Stoker awards, as well as numerous lifetime achievement awards over the course of his career. In 1966 he married his wife Susan Bitker. He is survived by his two adult children Emma and Ben.
