If Jordan Peele Described GET OUT as a “Documentary” What’s US? Peele Sets the Record Straight

After the release of Get Out in 2017, Jordan Peele famously described the film as a “documentary” on Twitter. Of course, it was a bit of a subversive statement; while there’s never been a body-snatching cult of powerful white elitists, Get Out certainly reflected the state of race-relations in America and addressed the situation with scathing satire.

So now that Peele’s sophomore feature has enthralled audiences at SXSW in advance of its nationwide release this Friday (March 22nd) how is the comedian-turned-fear-practitioner describing Us? Succinctly, it’s a horror movie.

While this might seem obvious to anyone who’s seen the film’s trailers (they’re genuinely chilling) Peele is once again being subtlety subversive. We live in an age where horror movies that rank as high-art are often called “thrillers” or “elevated horror” in an effort to distinguish them from the majority of the genre. It’s an insult to those of us who know horror has always been a viable and powerful method of storytelling.

Of course, Us is a horror movie—and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that!

Check out the synopsis and trailer for Us below.

Synopsis:
Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen to her family. Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. When the masks come off, each stranger takes the appearance of a different family member.

Us stars Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss, and Winston Duke.
