Recently we caught up with French writer and director Nicolas Simonin (the man behind the much buzzed-about short film Derailed), who provided us word and a trailer for his next horror short, Seizures.

Written, directed and produced by Simonin, Seizures stars Jonno Roberts (“C.S.I.”, “Person of Interest”, “Lie to Me”), Veronica Wylie and Scott Loska and centers around (according to the official synopsis) the character of “Vincent, a photojournalist suffering from a brain injury, [who] tries to reconnect with his past by developing old film strips of pictures he doesn’t even remember. Everything leads him to a strange gas station, where the man will face his worst nightmare.”

“It’s a film in the vein of Jacob’s Ladder, Angel Heart and Memento,” Simonin said of his sixteen-minute Seizures, which is slated to make its North American festival debut this fall. “It’s a psychological thriller with some disturbing, shocking images,” he continued. “If Derailed was like a dreamy nightmare, Seizures will offer more of a physical experience of nightmare and confusion.”

Emboldened by the positive festival reactions Derailed garnered (the flick screened at Screamfest 2011, Cannes 2011 and A Night of Horror in Sydney, Australia, among others, as well as being among Eli Roth’s Top10 finalist choice at Universal Studios’ Eyegore Awards 2011), the inspired filmmaker shot Seizures in San Diego over the course of four days last year on the Canon 5D and Canon 7D. Financed primarily via a successful crowd-sourcing campaign, the film employed the talents of a multi-national cast and crew, including Americans Olivia Kuan and Afton Adams (director of photography and makeup supervisor, respectfully), Argentinian sound designer Yamil Burguener, UK composer Zoe Blade, French editor Sylviane Tosi, and more.

Of his inspiration for Seizures, “After exploring the darkness of a city like Paris in Derailed,” said Simonin, who is now a proud Los Angeleno, “I wanted to do a film that would show the experience inside the head of the lead, something about the perception of your surroundings. Everything started with some research I did about brain seizures, and I began to wonder what would be the life of someone suffering from them, who is able to feel the present, the past, and the future.”
