I Am Legend Sequel Rumors

Will Smith still isn't Lengend! As if the 2007 revisionist take on Richard Matheson’s classic I Am Legend wasn’t enough, Ain’t it Cool News is reporting what the upcoming prequel/sequel might be about.

Rumors of a prequel had been burbling forth for quite some time. This latest round of gossip seems to suggest the prequel idea has been scrapped in preference for making a true sequel. There are some obvious bottlenecks to work through, such as how in the world can they work Will Smith into the sequel when his character ended the last film in a rather inanimate state commonly known as “dead”.

Here’s my guess: writers will create a twin brother for Robert Neville, played also by Smith. He’ll be the black sheep of the family, living a rather free spirited and possibly somewhat criminal life, all while his twin brother joined the military and studied science. Now he’s forced to further his brother’s legacy by actually pretending to be him, so that the “Legend” can live on to give the masses hope. Robert Neville’s twin must come to grips with old sibling rivalry while assuming the role of his visionary lost brother, and so lead the last remnants of humanity against the vile vampire scourge!

More details will be reported as they are revealed!

  1. Am I going to have my DC card if I admit that I actually kinda dig Tristan’s idea.

Or, we could do an amazing crossover with “I, Robot”, where the explosion opens a rift in the space/time continuum, and in steps whatever the hell Will Smith’s character’s name was in that movie. So now, we get cyber-Robert Neville, and his wisecracking robot vampire slayer sidekick, voiced by Nick Cannon.

  2. Ugh. Okay, here is the plan. We pull a “Halloween Resurrection” by not resurrecting anyone and instead saying that he never died. He slipped into a coma and at the beginning of the movie he wakes up. Why the zompires never finished him off is left unanswered, but I have been watching lots of “Heroes” so that does not seem like that bad a plot hole to me. And if people liked the ending of the first, I doubt they will care either.

I am also going to go the “Blade” route of Mr. (or Ms.) Blockbuster. Only I am going to say that he gets Ryan Reynolds and a bland lifeless hot woman, nay, girl, who pulls out her ipod whenever she can as side-kicks, thus crushing the only worthy part of the first movie.

Plus, “Legend Shark Repellent” and “Legend Zompire Repellent.”

  3. I’m down!

Smith gets cloned in a lab somewhere by the military long before the incident and he breaks free, just as intelligent as the original character, but with supernatural (think Blade-like) capabilities. The True Day-Walker!

  4. We should have this as a DC contest; whoever can guess the closest to how they’ll squeeze Will Smith into a sequel wins a copy of Richard Matheson’s original I Am Legend signed by, er, Uncle Creepy!

    • Okay.

They’ll have him appear extensively as video footage while the humans are trying to clean up the city. One of the main characters, most likely female, will become enamoured of him watching his footage. They’re probably have a lot of goobly gook about ‘The Legend’ and in some sort of voice-over finale she’ll say “We expected a legend but what we found was something greater. We found a man.” or some such maudline nonesense.

  5. Look, it’s quite simple really… Will Smith steps out of the shower and goes, “Christ, that was a wierd dream. Fucking hell, look at all those vampires!!!”

  6. so the sequel is going to take place in a daytime soap opera? Cause that’s the only place I’ve ever known long lost identical twins to appear in.

  7. Careful, Tristan. You may want to slap a (c)2008 on that proposed synopsis, lest Warner Brothers seize upon it to make it their own.

Then again, I don’t know if you’d rather them just back up the Brinks truck at your front door.
