UK network ITV is currently hard at work on a handful of series we’re looking forward to, including “The Frankenstein Chronicles” and “Jekyll & Hyde.” But that’s not all, as they’re also bringing the legend of “Beowulf” to the small screen. Read on for details!

Deadline reports today that Kieran Bew (“Da Vinci’s Demons”) has been cast to play the lead role of Beowulf in ITV’s epic re-imagining of the iconic Old English poem, which follows the exploits of the titular warrior as he battles a fearsome monster during Britain’s Dark Ages.

Kieran will star alongside William Hurt, Joanne Whalley, Ed Speleers, David Ajala, Ian Puleston-Davies, Ellora Torchia, Gisli Orn Gardarsson, Susan Aderin, Kirsty Oswald, Laura Donnelly, Edward Hogg, Alex Price, Jack Rowan, and Itoya Osagiede.

Created by James Dormer (“Strike Back”), Tim Haines (“Primeval”), and Katie Newman (“Primeval”), the action-packed 13-part series is produced by ITV Studios and set in the mythical Shieldlands, a place of spectacle and danger populated by both humans and fantastical creatures. Dormer will write and exec produce.

ITV Studios’ Creative Director of Drama Tim Haines (“Walking With Dinosaurs”) will exec produce with ITV Studios’ Executive Producer of Drama Katie Newman (“Primeval: New World”). Stephen Smallwood (“Ripper Street”) will produce on location in County Durham and Northumberland.

ITV Director of Drama Steve November and Controller of Drama Victoria Fea commissioned the series.
