Martyrs Director on Hellraiser Redux?

Clive Barker to write Hellraiser remakeThe Weinsteins can’t seem to make up their mind as to who should be at the helm of their ill-conceived Hellraiser remake, having cycled through both the team who made Feast and the team who made Inside, but at least they seem to have settled on using a French director.

The boys at Bloody Disgusting got word that “>Martyrs director Pascal Laugier is now the name Harvey and Bob are whispering to one another to make the remake happen. Having not seen Martyrs yet I can’t determine if this is a good plan or not, but the festival buzz the flick’s been getting is a good sign.

No word on how similar the remake will be to either Barker’s original film or his short story it was based on, “The Hellbound Heart”, but at least we know if and when it does happen that it’ll look pretty! Keep it here for more word on the new Hellraiser as it comes down!

  1. Man oh man, by reading these comments I’m guessing this movie must suck when compared with the original. I saw the Spanish version and it really kicked ass, it was the single most terrifying film I’ve ever seen and by quite a bit.

It just pushes realism to the extreme, the camera is shaky because the cameraman is shitting his pants (and he supposedly was; apparently the actors weren’t aware of some of the movie’s events and their on-screen reactions are authentic); there is little or no music to reinforce immersion, and the ending is just mind-blowing (with no “antics”, whatever they were in this film). The original [REC] ending is just so claustrophobic and nightmarish that lots of people just walked out on it.

Oh well, I guess a remake is a remake (may I add: why the hell did they do a remake of it the same year the original came out? Censorship?). But I sure as hell advise everyone to give the original [REC] a shot, it’s awesome!

  2. Laugier revealed in an interview that the Weinsteins couldn’t even sit through MARTYRS but they decided to buy the rights anyway because it was suitable for their Dimension Xtreme label. So they decided he’d be the right guy to direct this…how? Because he makes extreme movies? Jeez. Do they even have a script they agree with by now? With a whole string of interesting and non-remade Clive Barker flicks heading our way (Midnight Meat Train, Book of Blood, Dread…) I am less and less interested in this remake, which I once thought might be a welcome chance to make a movie that stays closer to the novella than Barker’s own adaptation did.
