Early Art for Gens’ Vanikoro

Vanikoro art!Earlier today the folks over at Filmsactu got their hands on some preliminary production art for “>Vanikoro, the new film from Frontier(s) helmer Xavier Gens.

Vanikoro is the story of Jean-Francois de Galaup, a French explorer who, back in 1788, mysteriously disappeared with his entire crew. The film draws the conclusion that the ship and its crew ran afoul of cannibals on the titular island and will hopefully tell the story of how they were slowly integrated into their society … I do love cannibal movies!

Nothing’s been confirmed yet, but there are rumors that both Viggo Mortensen and Philip Seymour Hoffman are in talks to join Vanikoro. Hopefully we’ll be getting some solid casting word soon as the appearance of this teaser art shows that work is being done on the film.

Keep it here for more on Vanikoro as well as “>The Horde, which Gens is producing.

I’m not sold on Gens as a director yet. HITMAN was pretty awful piece of action trash and FRONTIER(S) was a decidedly mixed bag. Nicely made on a technical level and with some badass gore but I still can’t believe the ridiculous “message” about fascism he was trying to beat the viewer over the head with. Jeez.

It coul be bullshit Hollywood posturing, but Gens did say Hitman wasn’t his film at all. I don’t know how or why anyone would take responsibility for it; it was just so terrible.

I like Frontier(s) quite a bit but you’re right, there’s really not much to it to indicate he’s a good director, just a stylish one. If he gets the cast that’s been rumored for this, it could be a defining moment for him.
