Look to the Night Skies

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has scheduled a January 23rd DVD release for Night Skies, a sci-fi/horror film I’ve been waiting to finally see the light of day. Directed by Cemetery Gates‘ Roy Knyrim, Night Skies melds the actual “Phoenix Lights” incident of 1997. If you’ve never heard of this now infamous bit of ufology, then let me quote Wikipedia‘s description:
“The Phoenix Lights, sometimes referred to as “The Lights Over Phoenix”, is the popular name given to a series of optical phenomena that took place in the sky over the U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada on March 13, 1997. Lights of varying descriptions were seen by thousands of people between 19:30 and 22:30 MST, in a space of about 300 miles, from the Nevada line, through Phoenix, to the edge of Tucson. UFO proponents claimed they were part of aircraft unknown to man, but the USAF identified them as flares dropped by A-10 Warthog aircraft which were on training exercises.”
A movie about people being terrorized by flares falling from the sky probably wouldn’t be that good (although I’d love to see someone give it a try). Night Skies deals with six unfortunate individuals stranded in that particular neck of the Arizona woods at the wrong place and the wrong time and experience a close encounter of the most unpleasant kind. The film, starring Wishmaster 3‘s Jason Connery (son of Sean) and Final Destination 2‘s AJ Cook, perports to be based on true events taken from the transcripts of actual hypnosis-therapy sessions conducted with eye witnesses of what really happened that night. Well, I don’t know how true these “true events” are but that doesn’t change the fact that the film looks quite promising. Head over to the official website and check out the trailer. Starts off interestingly enough, then begins looking like your typical “people stranded in the woods being stalked” horror flick, before going all Fire in the Sky on us.
No word yet on any further DVD details aside from a $24.96 retail price. They haven’t released the official DVD artwork yet either; I’d highly recommend they stick with the promotional artwork above, though. Click here to pre-order the DVD through Evilshop!
