Hannibal Casting Change: Joe Anderson Replacing Michael Pitt; See Him as Mason Verger

joeandersonA bit of news regarding NBC’s stellar series “Hannibal” has come out, and we have to say we didn’t see this coming! Actor Michael Pitt, who garnered nothing but positive reviews for his portrayal of arch-villain Mason Verger last season, has opted out of the role for Season 3, and he’s being replaced by Joe Anderson (pictured right; The Grey, The Crazies, “The River”).

The change shouldn’t be too jarring, however, since when we left Verger at the end of Season 2, he was carving off pieces of his face, resulting in a rather altered appearance anyway.

Plus, when the show returns, he’ll have his own personal doctor tending to his needs.  Per TVLine, in the upcoming season we’ll meet Cordell, a “quiet, very intelligent, and definitely creepy” character who is described as “attentive and gentle with Mason, a professional who cares about his work, but we get a sense he might be as sadistic as his boss — and a perfect fit to become his potential henchman.

Most recently Anderson did a pretty good job acting like an asshole in Horns, but he’s going to have to step up his game to fill Pitt’s shoes. The below photo from his Instagram account shows he’s on the right track!

The Season 3 opener will pick up one year after Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and Bedelia (Gillian Anderson) were seen jetting off to Europe. For more info be sure to visit “Hannibal” on NBC.com, “like” “Hannibal” on Facebook, and follow “Hannibal” on Twitter.
