Can’t say any of us saw this coming. Friday the 13th getting rebooted as a holiday-themed horror comedy entitled Jason Goes to Mall: The Final Black Friday?

If you’ve been wondering what the status of the new Friday the 13th is, the answer is that Hollywood producers wiser than you or I have decided that the premise of teenagers going out into the woods and getting hacked up by Jason is just too passé in this day and age. They believe the franchise needs a new hook (I don’t mean of the I Know What You Did Last Summer variety), and going the route of the horror comedy seems to be the new direction for the franchise.

Details are sketchy at the moment, but word filtering out just in time for the holiday is that when the next installment in the long-running horror franchise begins, the land that the former Camp Crystal Lake used to reside upon has been redeveloped as a swanky new indoor mall. Unfortunately for Black Friday shoppers stampeding through the Crystal Lake Mall in search of savings, Jason returns yet again and proceeds to slash more than prices.

The film will focus mainly on the 20-something daughter of Tommy Jarvis and her circle of attractive young friends working the holiday rush at a camping goods store in the mall named “Hodder’s Outdoor Supplies.” She’ll begin to suspect that her family’s legacy has come back to haunt her after encountering a seedy old Salvation Army bellringer outside the mall warning that anyone who goes inside will die on “Blood Friday.

Paramount is set to co-produce the production with Blumhouse since by law all theatrically released horror movies must now be produced in some form by Blumhouse. Jason Goes to Mall: The Final Black Friday marks the first feature developed at Blumhouse by former Shock Till You Drop editor turned Blumhouse development exec Ryan Turek, who describes the high concept horror comedy as “Rob Zombie’s Halloween meets Jingle All the Way.” Though he wouldn’t provide details, he did go on to explain, “Now that Ryan Murphy has invented the horror comedy, everyone in Hollywood wants in on this burgeoning new genre.”

Shooting is set to begin sometime after the first of the year with plans to release the film on Friday, November 13, 2015. Or never…

Remember the slasher movie Pieces? Remember the “You Don’t Need to Go to Texas for a Chainsaw Massacre” tagline? Turns out you don’t need April Fool’s Day to write a parody story either.
