Dark City (1998)

Finally, a movie we’ve been waiting for a decent DVD release of since the advent of the technology. This director’s cut has never-before-seen footage, enhanced picture and three commentary tracks. If you missed it, the film is about a man (Rufus Sewell) who wakes with no memory at a grisly murder scene and slowly watches his life plummet into a world of insanity. Every month I regret ever starting to list these damn things. Do you know how tiring it is trying to find out what went on during a specific time period of a Gothic soap opera? Well, it’s not nearly as fun as it sounds, I’ll tell you that. Ghosts, strange disappearances, women put into trances, psychic investigators and séances all take place during this chunk of time, so there you go. Buy it here!

I know not enough of you suckers got out to see this when it was in theaters, so I hope you make up for it now that it’s on DVD. No, it’s not anything you’ve not seen before, but it’s a helluva lot of fun and a really well done post-apocalypse movie from the guy who did The Descent and Dog Soldiers. If you have a Blu-ray player, you had better get it on that format cause this is the kind of film that begs for high def and good speakers. The Erotic Grotesque Collection

Artsmagic returns from obscurity with a very strange collection of films that I’m sure most of us have never seen. Since before recorded history the Japanese have been fascinated with the combination of the erotic and the grotesque, and here are three great examples of it: Angel Guts: Red Classroom, Malice@ Doll and Love-Zero=Infinity. Hair Extensions: Exte (2007)

One of strangest and most enjoyable films I’ve seen at Fantasia was Sion Sono’s “>Exte (review), and I’m very happy Tokyo Shock is putting it out in a 2-disc edition. The story is about a mortuary employee who has a fetish and finds a girl’s corpse whose hair continues to grow after her death. But that’s because her hair is sentient, and whenever someone uses extensions made from it, they die a horrible death. Buy it here!
Lips of Blood (1972)

A strange film from Jean Rollin? The hell you say! And it’s about vampires, too, if you can believe it. The story follows a young man who is haunted by visions of predatory vampire women whom he feels a strange connection to, despite being terrified of them. Apparently one of the most anticipated and sought-after of Rollins’ cannon, this new edition promises to be the best looking the film’s ever been. Buy it here!
Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)

Twenty-five years we’ve been without a sequel to The Lost Boys until someone at Warner Bros. decided we needed one. Thanks for that, whoever you might be. The sequel tries way too hard to use all the stuff that worked so well in the first movie without actually understanding why it worked, or so it seems. A veritable cavalcade of monstery goodness is in this box set, though I wonder how much of it is actually good… Inside we have The Screaming Skull, The Monster Walks, She Beast, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, The Giant Gila Monster, Attack of the Giant Leeches, The Killer Shrews, Beast From Haunted Cave and Human Monster. A family on their way to the daughter’s softball camp stop off at a quiet sideshow attraction, where the father hopes to get more fodder for the book he’s writing on these American oddities. The Ultimate Vampire Collection

I don’t know about “ultimate”, but cramming 10 vampire movies into one box set has got to mean something. All right, here’s what we get: Vampire Stakes, Vulture’s Eye, Abomination, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, Project Vampire, The Darkness, Lord of the Vampires and The Werewolf Versus Vampire Women. Vengeance (2006)

Now here’s something I bet the cops never expected: While chasing down some criminals into an ancient forest, they stumble upon a mythical world where magic beasts exist and a mythical treasure is said to be there for the taking. I remember hearing about this Thai movie a long time ago, and it sounded like it’d be a lot of fun. Now we can find out for sure thanks to the folks at Navarre! Buy it here!
Virgin Witch (1970)

The story is about some scantily clad girls who are lured by a sleazy lesbian out to a country home, which is inhabited by Satanists who plan on using the girls as virgin sacrifices. Pretty simple way to squelch that plan; just have sex! Apparently this is one of Redemption’s best selling titles, which explain the re-release with better cover art. And hey, if that’s not enough, it’s got lots of good old-fashioned 70’s nudity! Buy it here!
