A decent helping of horror DVDs is coming your way this Tuesday, July 29th, 2008… check ’em out!
Click to see it bigger!Antisocial Behavior (2007)
Directed by Vinson Pike

Ever since a traumatic accident when he was a child, Jakob Kelser has been alone, shunning the outside world and ignoring everyone who tries to connect with him. When a gang of teenagers makes him their new target, all of his pent-up rage is released, and now not a single soul in his neighborhood is safe from his vengeance. Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Bloody Moon (1981)
Directed by Jess Franco

Incest, voyeurism and disco; only from Jess Franco can you expect to get all three in one movie. Bloody Moon was Franco’s answer to the stalk-n-slash trend of the late 70’s/early 80’s, but it’s nothing like any of the Black Christmas copycats that came out in that time frame. Fully remastered in high def and featuring a brand-new interview with the man himself! Buy it here!

Directed by Alex Proyas

Finally, a movie we’ve been waiting for a decent DVD release of since the advent of the technology. This director’s cut has never-before-seen footage, enhanced picture and three commentary tracks. If you missed it, the film is about a man (Rufus Sewell) who wakes with no memory at a grisly murder scene and slowly watches his life plummet into a world of insanity. An absolute sci-fi classic, I can’t wait to see this new DVD! Buy it here!

Directed by Various

Every month I regret ever starting to list these damn things. Do you know how tiring it is trying to find out what went on during a specific time period of a Gothic soap opera? Well, it’s not nearly as fun as it sounds, I’ll tell you that. Ghosts, strange disappearances, women put into trances, psychic investigators and séances all take place during this chunk of time, so there you go. Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Doomsday (2008)
Directed by Neil Marshall

I know not enough of you suckers got out to see this when it was in theaters, so I hope you make up for it now that it’s on DVD. No, it’s not anything you’ve not seen before, but it’s a helluva lot of fun and a really well done post-apocalypse movie from the guy who did The Descent and Dog Soldiers. If you have a Blu-ray player, you had better get it on that format cause this is the kind of film that begs for high def and good speakers. Check out our “>Doomsday DVD review for more reasons to own this! Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger! The Erotic Grotesque Collection
Directed by Various

Artsmagic returns from obscurity with a very strange collection of films that I’m sure most of us have never seen. Since before recorded history the Japanese have been fascinated with the combination of the erotic and the grotesque, and here are three great examples of it: Angel Guts: Red Classroom, Malice@ Doll and Love-Zero=Infinity. Click to see it bigger!Hair Extensions: Exte (2007)
Directed by Sion Sono

One of strangest and most enjoyable films I’ve seen at Fantasia was Sion Sono’s “>Exte (review), and I’m very happy Tokyo Shock is putting it out in a 2-disc edition. The story is about a mortuary employee who has a fetish and finds a girl’s corpse whose hair continues to grow after her death. But that’s because her hair is sentient, and whenever someone uses extensions made from it, they die a horrible death. Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Lips of Blood (1972)
Directed by Jean Rollin

A strange film from Jean Rollin? The hell you say! And it’s about vampires, too, if you can believe it. The story follows a young man who is haunted by visions of predatory vampire women whom he feels a strange connection to, despite being terrified of them. Apparently one of the most anticipated and sought-after of Rollins’ cannon, this new edition promises to be the best looking the film’s ever been. Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)
Directed by PJ Pesce

Twenty-five years we’ve been without a sequel to The Lost Boys until someone at Warner Bros. decided we needed one. Thanks for that, whoever you might be. The sequel tries way too hard to use all the stuff that worked so well in the first movie without actually understanding why it worked, or so it seems. Check out my “>Lost Boys: The Tribe review for more criticism, but do yourself a favor and avoid this sucker. Pun intended. Buy it here!

Directed by Seiichi Fukuda

At the tender age of 16, a girl was raped by three men, making her pregnant and infected with syphilis. Now she’s a well respected doctor practicing medicine during the day and stalking the city streets at night to get revenge on men of all shapes and sizes through the most effective weapon in the world: sex! She finally decides to settle down and raise a family but soon finds out that her husband has a dark secret that may drive her back to a life of murder. Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Monsters Gone Wild
Directed by Various

A veritable cavalcade of monstery goodness is in this box set, though I wonder how much of it is actually good… Inside we have The Screaming Skull, The Monster Walks, She Beast, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, The Giant Gila Monster, Attack of the Giant Leeches, The Killer Shrews, Beast From Haunted Cave and Human Monster. Yes, definitely some good ones in there, and you can’t beat the price! Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Side Sho (2007)
Directed by Michael D’Anna

A family on their way to the daughter’s softball camp stop off at a quiet sideshow attraction, where the father hopes to get more fodder for the book he’s writing on these American oddities. Instead they find a murderous family of inbred mutants who really don’t care one way or another about being in any city boy’s high-faulting book. Check out our “>Side Sho DVD review for more! Click to see it bigger! The Ultimate Vampire Collection
Directed by Various

I don’t know about “ultimate”, but cramming 10 vampire movies into one box set has got to mean something. All right, here’s what we get: Vampire Stakes, Vulture’s Eye, Abomination, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, Project Vampire, The Darkness, Lord of the Vampires and The Werewolf Versus Vampire Women. What the hell, it’s only $12; can you really complain? Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Vengeance (2006)
Directed by Pleo Sirisuwan

Now here’s something I bet the cops never expected: While chasing down some criminals into an ancient forest, they stumble upon a mythical world where magic beasts exist and a mythical treasure is said to be there for the taking. I remember hearing about this Thai movie a long time ago, and it sounded like it’d be a lot of fun. Now we can find out for sure thanks to the folks at Navarre! Buy it here!

Click to see it bigger!Virgin Witch (1970)
Directed by Raymond Austin

The story is about some scantily clad girls who are lured by a sleazy lesbian out to a country home, which is inhabited by Satanists who plan on using the girls as virgin sacrifices. Pretty simple way to squelch that plan; just have sex! Apparently this is one of Redemption’s best selling titles, which explain the re-release with better cover art. And hey, if that’s not enough, it’s got lots of good old-fashioned 70’s nudity! Buy it here!
