Vertigo Hears an Echo

We knew it was only a matter of time before the Filipino horror hit Sigaw would find its way into the hands of remakers, and of course the primary force behind it is Vertigo Entertainment.

The Hollywood Reporter announced that Vertigo is fast-tracking a remake of Sigaw, retitled The Echo, with Hitcher remake writer Eric Bernt modifying the script and Yam Laranas, who directed the original, back in the director’s seat. I have to say I dig this new trend of letting filmmakers remake their own movies for us Westerners; it not only means they will get to fix perceived errors with the original that were caused by money or time issues, but we also get the purest interpretation of the material possible since it’s coming from the same source.

The Echo is about an ex-con who moves into an old apartment building, only to quickly figure out that an abusive cop neighbor is beating his wife and daughter on a daily basis. When he tries to stop the cop on his own, he becomes trapped in a curse.

The amount of good horror that’s come out of the Philippines can easily be counted on one hand; it’s nice to see those who do it well getting their shot in the U.S. so early! Shooting will hopefully get under way on The Echo as early as March 19th so keep it here for more info!
