The CW Picks Up iZombie and The Messengers, Passes on Supernatural Spinoff, and Cancels The Tomorrow PeopleTV networks are firming up their fall schedules this week and next, and we have news from The CW as far as which pilots they’ve picked up and which series won’t be returning…

First off, THANK GOD they’ve passed on “Bloodlines,” the “Supernatural” spinoff that sank like a lead balloon a few weeks ago. They’ve picked up both “The Messengers” and “iZombie” (and “The Flash” and “Jane the Virgin” for the non-horror crowd).

They’ve cancelled “The Tomorrow People,” a show we watched solely for Mark Pellegrino – hopefully he’ll land another series shortly. Also cancelled were “The Carrie Diaries” and “Star-Crossed,” with “The 100,” “Hart of Dixie,” and “Beauty and the Beast” among the latest renewals. (You may recall that “Arrow,” “Supernatural,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” and “Reign” all got early pickups.)

Look for an announcement of The CW’s full schedule shortly. In the meantime, here’s a breakdown of the two new shows we’ll be keeping a close eye on.

“THE MESSENGERS” (CBS Television Studios and Thunder Road)
Writer: Eoghan O’Donnell; Producers: Basil Iwanyk, Eoghan O’Donnell, Kent Kubena, Ava Jamshidi
Logline: When a mysterious object crashes down to earth, a group of seemingly unconnected strangers die from the energy pulse but then awaken to learn that they must prevent the Apocalypse.

“iZOMBIE” (Rob Thomas Productions, Warner Bros. Television)
Writer: Rob Thomas, Diane Ruggiero; Producers: Rob Thomas, Diane Ruggiero, Danielle Stokdyk, Dan Etheridge
Logline: A med student-turned-zombie takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity. But with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head. Based on the characters created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred; published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.
