Hammer Announces Three New Horrors

Let the Right One InA story in Variety regarding Hammer’s upcoming production slate last week must have completely slipped under our radar, but I guess it’s all right that it happen from time to time. We punish ourselves and move on.

The article announces three new films for the British studio, already on the comeback with Beyond the Rave, which recently finished up its run on MySpace, and a remake of “>Let the Right One In (review). They have plans in place for films The Wake Wood, The Resident and The Quiet Ones.

The Wake Wood will be directed by David Keating, which is about all we know about it right now. The Resident will be helmed by Antti Jokinen, who’s also working on Half to Death for Rogue, and is described as being “in the tradition of The Exorcism of Emily Rose“. Finally, The Quiet Ones is based on a true story of some hippy scientists from Canada who attempted to create a ghost back in the 1970’s.

Well, at least they’re not all vampire films, right? And seriously, how you can say something’s in the “tradition” of a film that’s only a few years old? Lazy.

“Those earlier Hammer films were very much of their time, and there is a lot of affection for them, but we have to keep up with audiences’ expectations today,” Hammer chief exec Simon Oakes told the trade. “I like to think of ourselves now as dealing more in the Hitchcockian areas of terror and suspense.”

Here’s hoping they’re right; sure would be cool to have Hammer back among the big boys again!
