ABC Teaming with Marc Cherry for a TV Adaptation of The Phantom of the OperaWhen will it stop?  After yesterday’s news about a possible “Frankenstein” TV series heading our way, now comes word that “The Phantom of the Opera” could be getting its own adaptation on the small screen as well.  Read on… and weep…

Per THR’s The Live Feed, ABC is reteaming with “Desperate Housewives” and “Devious Maids” creator Marc Cherry for the “Phantom” adaptation, which has received a script commitment.

It’s described as “a drama with musical elements” in the same vein as the network’s “Nashville” and will be “a contemporary reimagining of Gaston Leroux’s Gothic novel set in the sexy and cutthroat world of the modern-day music business.” It apparently has no ties to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s uber popular stage version of the tale.

It will be written by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (Broadway’s First Date, Secondhand Lions, 17 Again) with Cherry and his ABC Studios-based Cherry/Wind Productions head Sabrina Wind on board to exec produce.

Look for more as it comes!
