OriginsThough George A. Romero’s best filmmaking days may sadly be behind him, his son, Cameron Romero (Staunton Hill), is taking over the reins; and with his next project he looks to pay tribute to his dad’s most enduring piece of cinema.

I’m of course talking about Night of the Living Dead, which gets the prequel treatment with Origins!

Just launched today was the Indiegogo fundraising campaign for Origins, which will be written/directed by Cameron Romero and (partially) produced by the master himself. Almost 50 years after George A. Romero gave birth to the modern day zombie, his son hopes to at long last provide some backstory on Night of the Living Dead, like only a Romero could.

Origins is a story in the Romero universe of how the first “zombie” strolled across that cemetery and into lives of those in the “Dead” series almost fifty years later. This is a project that will redefine the genre, says the campaign’s website, as well as the monster and everything that scares you about them.

Set in 1962, the film will center on Dr. Ryan Cartwright, who was on the scientific and altruistic path to find a way for humans to sustain life in the event of M.A.D (Mutual Assured Destruction), a huge topic brought on by the Cuban Missile Crisis. Little did he know that over the course of the next several years of his life, he would take a well-funded and military-focused journey to the darkest corners of the world…  as he creates the ultimate weapon for the government and a curse that will plague mankind for the rest of days.

“I want to take back the Zombie Genre in the name of the Legacy that my father created almost 50 years ago,”  says Cameron. “I want to tell the Origin story of the modern zombie, in a way that my father wasn’t able to back in 1968.”
