Official Artwork for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 Swoops In Plus Some Early Details of What to ExpectThe Hunger Games Facebook page revealed the first official artwork for Mockingjay – Part 1, and along with a look at that, we have some juicy tidbits about what to expect from the upcoming sequel location-wise and more.

Variety did an in-depth story on the film covering a wide range of topics, many having to do with the marketing campaign, and we have some highlights here. Be sure to hit the link at the bottom of the page for the full details.

Mockingjay – Part 1 is set in a location far different from the world of the first two films (and Suzanne Collins’ books). Director Francis Lawrence told the trade that the next two films take place in a Panem so devolved as to be barely recognizable. “We are going to new places,” Lawrence promises. “No one’s ever been to District 13, and we have not really been in much of the Capital, so creating that is the really fun stuff.”

For those of us hoping for some intense battles in the two Mockingjay installments (being shot simultaneously in Atlanta — at a cost of more than $250 million), Lionsgate production president Erik Feig said that they’ve booked Berlin’s massive Templehof Airport — built in 1927, reconstructed by the Nazis as a symbol of supremacy, and closed six years ago — and huge apartment complexes outside Paris for shooting battle scenes. Feig allows that part of the inspiration came from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket, his cinematic recounting of the 1968 Tet Offensive in Vietnam. “Kubrick shot the siege in London,” Feig notes. “In a weird way, we love the idea of urban sprawl. So we (looked for) big buildings that have been around forever. We kept coming back to classic war movies, and we started thinking we should look into Europe.”

Below is a pretty cool comparison of the series’ posters thus far. Lionsgate’s Chief Marketing Officer, Tim Palen, used the iconic mockingjay image from the book covers for the first film as a symbol of freedom and for the second with the pin ablaze. In the third image, the bird is breaking free and taking flight — reminding fans of what they liked about the first two movies and hinting at what’s to come.

Danny Strong and Peter Craig wrote the two-part Hunger Games finale, Mockingjay, which follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) as she leads a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol in the futuristic land of Panem. Francis Lawrence returns to direct.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 will be in theatres on November 21st, 2014, with Part 2 following on November 20th, 2015.

The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either.
