GET MY GUN Review – Gritty, Grimy And Harsh Revenge Thriller Will Have You In Its Sights

Starring Kate Hoffman, Christy Casey, Rosanne Rubino

Directed by Brian Darwas

With the film’s first spoken line, you just know that director Brian Darwas’ grindhouse-styled thriller Get My Gun is a film that immediately wants to grab you by the gonads and give you a good shake to rattle your attention.

Starring Kate Hoffman as Amanda, a generally quiet and reserved hotel maid, she spends her days mopping up the various bodily fluids spilled by some seedy locals who frequent the establishment, and for all intents and purposes it’s no joke that she hates her job, but she still puts in the hours to pay the bills. She hits it off with new employee Rebecca (Casey), and together they form a bond that will bring them through some seriously tragic shit. Make no mistake, this film isn’t a feel-good story, nor is it your traditional horror flick, but the subject matter and impending damage done is the stuff of nightmares for sure. One day while cleaning rooms, Amanda is caught inside a room and raped by a devious scumbag known only as “The Man” (William Joussett) – she’s traumatized, and worst of all, she later finds out that she’s pregnant…and if you thought that was the least of her problems, boy are you sorely mistaken. Amanda’s search for assistance leads her to a doctor (Rubino) who wishes to adopt the baby when it’s born, but it becomes painfully obvious that the “doc” doesn’t have all her screws very tightly fastened – told ya there was more trouble comin’.

The remainder of the film acts as a “stalkish-revenge” type of film, and it definitely works on a number of levels – first off, the notion that someone could be so immensely deranged is frightening in itself, and the results of said stalking will have you questioning any sudden friendship found in a personal section (hopefully none of you would resort, but I’m just tossing that one out there). Also, Darwas opted to go for the shock value with the violence level, which isn’t necessarily in quantity, but the quality of which we’re taking in, and most notably are the performances themselves – Hoffman’s character is as straight-to-the-bone as you could possibly imagine, and she just looks like the girl down the street whose life has taken a circuitous swirl down the porcelain, but she’s damned to pick herself up and right the wrongs. Also Rubino’s portrayal as the kooky doc is chilling at least, and she’ll present her madness right in your face whether you like it or not – no muss, no fuss, no farting around. Overall, Get My Gun is a well-thought out exploitative flick that should sit at the top of your watch list when it comes to you – definitely recommended.

Summary

We’re trucking back to the age of the down and dirty films that promised vengeance upon wrongdoers – this movie’s got nuts, and isn’t afraid to showcase them in true grindhouse fashion.
