Kevin Smith's Tusk Heads Back in Front of the Cameras
There's perhaps no horror film coming our way next year that's more intriguing than Kevin Smith's Tusk, which centers around a killer who attempts to turn a podcaster into a human-walrus hybrid.
Though Smith has been rushing the film along in an effort to premiere it at next month's Sundance Film Festival, it looks like he's hit a little speed bump along the way. Read on for details.
As reported by our friends over at Bloody Disgusting, Smith opened up about the progress of the film on the latest episode of his SModcast, revealing that the cameras will continue to roll through the year, possibly even into next year.
“We’ve still got two more shooting days here in Los Angeles to wrap the flick with our fifth Beatle – the performer playing the role of investigator Guy Lapointe,” said Smith. “It’s looking like late December/early January for that – which would mean I’d be racing to my self-imposed Sundance finish line. And while I had to rush to make it all happen so as not to risk losing momentum, rushing now might foster a cavity around my creativity."
“The hard part’s over: we got the flick in the can (which sounds vaguely dirty),” he continues. “Now that I’m seeing what we’ve created in madcap haste, I’m slowing down the pace because, shockingly, this flick turned out WAY the fuck better than I’d dreamed it could be.”
Smith also said that SModcast listeners will be the first ones to see a work-in-progress cut of the film, sometime around Sundance. So if you want to be among those lucky first, be sure to keep your eyes peeled over on the SModcast website!
Haley Joel Osment plays Teddy, whose best friend and podcast co-host (Justin Long) goes missing in the backwoods of Canada. He joins forces with his friend’s girlfriend (Genesis Rodriguez) to search for him.
Financier and production company DEMAREST FILMS (Machete Kills, A Most Wanted Man) is underwriting and producing visionary director Kevin Smith's next film, the audacious and utterly terrifying Tusk.
Tusk stars Justin Long (Live Free or Die Hard, A Case of You) and cult favorite Michael Parks (Red State, Django Unchained). Smith directs from his own script, which evolved from Episode 259 of his long-running podcast with Scott Mosier, the award-winning SModcast. Tusk's horror story follows a podcaster who sets out to interview an eccentric, reclusive old seafarer, only to find himself a plaything in the gruesome plot of a deranged killer.
Demarest's Sam Englebardt and William D. Johnson produce alongside Shannon McIntosh for Smith's SModcast Pictures banner. Demarest's David Greathouse and Jennifer Schwalbach are executive producers. SModCo's Jordan Monsanto and Chris Parkinson are associate producers.
