GhostbustersYesterday we learned that Paul Feig is officially going to be the man to bring Ghostbusters back to the big screen, in the form of an all-female reboot written by Katie Dippold (The Heat). We knew it wouldn’t be long before Feig really opened up about the project, and today he’s done just that!

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director detailed his plans for the reboot, and some of what he had to say just might surprise you.

First off, it appears that his film will be taking place in a world where the events of the previous two films never happened, thereby ensuring that it’s not going to be any sort of sequel.

I love origin stories,” said Feig, when asked about the general direction he was going with the story. “That’s my favorite thing. I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God, what’s going on?

Scary, huh? Given the fact that Feig is directing and Dippold is writing, I can’t say that scary was a word I expected to see thrown around in talks about this one, but my interest is definitely piqued. A nice blend of scares and humor would be a delight, as those two elements are what made me fall in love with Ghostbusters in the first place.

Speaking of which, many have been wondering if anyone from the original two films will be returning to cameo in the reboot, and Feig says that the door is open, but he’s again not looking to mash together his world and the previously established world.

Well, I mean, look, those are my comedy heroes,” he said. “So as far as I’m concerned, anybody wants to come back I welcome with open arms. It would just be in different roles now, but it would be fun to figure out how to do that.”

We want to have fun with giving nods to what came before, but we don’t want to be bound by it because Katie and I already have talked at length and we have really fun ideas for things,” he continued. “We want to do clever nods to it, but not cloying nods to it. We want to have the ability to really bring it into modern day.”

As for the cast of the film, Feig of course didn’t name anyone he hopes to bring on board, though he noted that he’s got a lot of ideas. “Bottom line: I just want the best, funniest cast,” he said.

I think fans will be very happy with what we do because it has fun with what came before but it’s new,” Feig promised. “It’s just a new, fun take on it.”
