Del Toro & Uni Move on Hater

Hater, written by David MoodyThis morning it’s been officially confirmed via Variety that Universal has picked up David Moody’s 2006 novel Hater for film adaptation. Originally this was one of the many projects Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct before that little movie about hobbits took over his life.

Hater tells of an epidemic of random violence that sweeps throughout the world, causing people, for seemingly no reason at all, to lash out at one another, usually with fatal results. Glenn Mazzara (“The Shield”) is adapting the book to screenplay, and del Toro will still serve as producer on the film.

””What I loved about ‘Hater,’” Guillermo told the trade, ”is it recognizes the reality that we live in, where it is incredibly easy to polarize, to hate for gender, race, age.” No director has been chosen yet, but del Toro, along with producer Mark Johnson, promises to be as involved as possible before he gets too buried in the madness that will be The Hobbit.
