Dish Gives Monsters HD the AXE!

Well, it WAS alive! What is it about horror themed channels? This idea just seems to be doomed. Monsters HD was and is the only true channel out there dedicated to our genre. Unfortunately their main platform has just pulled the rug out from under them.

Without warning to fans Dish Network pulled all of their VOOM channels, which is where Monsters HD hung its proverbial hat. “Kung-Fu HD and several others were also given the heave-ho, but Dish did add ABC Family so at least viewers can tune in to Pat Robertson” in as high a resolution as possible.

DC reader David Anderson wrote in with the infuriating news, which also contained the above Pat Robertson quip (it was too funny not to use; thanks, David!). Anderson also provided a link to an online petition that may help to eventually right this wrong. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.

It should be noted that none of the VOOM channels are off the air. They’re just no longer available on Dish. Something tells me that lots of horror fans will soon be canceling their satellite service.

Why this no-brainer of an idea continues to wade through troubled waters is anyone’s guess. There could be one possible explanation though … horror channels apparently have (as Crazy Ralph would say) … A DEATH CURSE!!!!!

I think this is more a matter of demand, TV services have a clear evidence of best demanded channels, apparently Monsters HD wasn’t high on demand. It’s also true this is the only channel of genre and I think it would have worth more consideration here.

We get it on Cablevision. It’s a great channel, but I knew it was doomed.

I don’t have Chiller myself, but I’ve looked at their line-up. Can’t give them credit for the movies they show, but they have been airing some classic and/or interesting horror tv shows that aren’t currently found anywhere else. I agree that we need an unedited horror channel (with the programming smarts of something like IFC), but Chiller is a start. I wish I received it, but I’m not going to bother with Dish or Direct until I have my own place.

This is just the latest sad chapter in a long book full of sad chapters now.

What gets me is that stuff like Fox Reality is not only still on the air, but THRIVING! Monsters HD actually tried some cool stuff, and eventually will get buried for it. But this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Dish has been getting lapped by DirecTV lately. The market’s edging closer and closer to being a monopoly like satellite radio.

BTW, wasn’t Dish the only way to get it? Is it airing on any other carriers?

Geez, I thought I couldn’t find the channel last night cuz I was so damned baked, but it turns out my worst fears have been realized!

I don’t think this is a matter of my particular favorite channel not pulling in viewers, though…I think it’s quite possible that nearly all of the other VOOM channels sucked so bad (except for the KungFu channel and Soundstage) that the entire package was dropped.

    Dammit. Just Dammit.

Thanks for running the petition link, UC! I also doubt that it’ll help much, but at least it’s an outlet for my rage.

Dish Network has the balls to say “But we’ve given you Chiller as an alternative to Monsters.” Chiller is in standard definition and I’d have to pay more to get the Everything Package just to receive it. Kung-Fu HD is also gone and they just ran the superior ONIBABA, which is thankfully residing on my DVR. I just hope Direct TV picks up the Voom channels.

Dish Network, four words. BALLS IN YOUR MOUTH! Big Hairy salty Balls right in your mouth.

Its not technically a channel, but there’s the FEARNET on demand service from comcast. Its selection isn’t great, with a lot of direct to video movies, but they do have some old classics like evil dead 2 playing.
I’m not positive but I think they also have their content available in HD. Anyway, it gets the job done. Personally, I prefer an on-demand type service to a channel where I’m forced to tune in at a specific time.

Scream TV over here in Canada is pretty good, though it is in desperate need of a broader selection of movies. Either way, that doesn’t really help the horror fans in America…

  • Hunter1006

And now that I think about it, they don’t exactly show quality stuff… I once was watching PSYCHO IV on it…ehhhh

  • Uncle Creepy

The Chiller channel neuters its movies and has commercials. Monsters HD provided that material uncut and they even helped to fund the restoration of From Beyond!

  • PrairieGhost

Would be nice if Directv would buy the satellite from Echostar and put them on Directv. That’s wishful thinking.

  • Hunter1006

What about CHILLER? They show classic horror movies/shows!
