The Latest Chronicle of Riddick Kicks Off the Fall Movie Season

The weekend after Labor Day is traditionally a slow one for Hollywood. It’s also the official beginning of the fall movie season as well as the NFL season. This year it kicked off with Vin Diesel’s Riddick back on the big screen for the first time in nine years. Did he score or fumble the ball?
Diesel got the rights to the character in exchange for his cameo appearance in The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift. Riddick is no Fast & Furious when it comes to box office receipts, but there might still be some gas left in its tank.
Riddick opened at No. 1 with an unspectacular $18.6 million. Not that great until you consider the budget was only $34 million, and international box office and home video should guarantee the film a profit. Whether or not this proves to be the last time we see our favorite Furyan on the big screen remains to be seen.
Elysium dropped to No. 7, followed by The World’s End at No. 10, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones at No. 11, and This Is the End (a re-release) and You’re Next trailing behind at Nos. 13 and 14, respectively.
Next week sees Insidious: Chapter 2 try to recreate the success of its predecessor. I’m really not sensing much buzz surrounding this sequel. What say you?
We’ll be watching Gravity and Machete Kills, but as for pure horror, the Insidious sequel and the Carrie remake are about all there is for fright fans for the next two months. Adding in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Oldboy, that’s it for the remainder of the year so you can pretty much have your best/worst horror films of 2013 lists finished by Halloween.
