Chucky vs. Leprechaun or Freddy?! Don Mancini Talks the Future of Chucky at London's FrightFest
The UK's Film4 FrightFest kicked off in London last night, and Curse of Chucky director Don Mancini and star Fiona Dourif were in attendance for the world premiere of the uncut version of the next installment in the saga of killer doll Chucky.
During the post-film Q&A, Mancini had some pretty interesting things to say about the franchise.
As reported by Bleeding Cool, Mancini talked about the original script he wrote for Child's Play, which was going to see Chucky brought to life not by killer Charles Lee Ray but rather by little Andy Barclay, who exchanges blood with the doll and uses Chucky to do his bidding. He described the original script as being "more psychological," and he planned on exploring whether Chucky was really alive or if Andy was a total psychopath.
Mancini also spoke about mash-ups with the Leprechaun and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises, remarking that he'd love to see Chucky and the Leprechaun do battle and that it'd be fun to see Chucky show up on Elm Street and have him and Freddy compete to see who could kill more people. He even mentioned that he's talked in the past about working with John Waters on a Chucky musical, a stage play that he'd someday love to make happen. Of course, Mancini was just having fun with the ideas, and there are no plans for any of these projects to actually happen. But goddamn, a Chucky vs. Leprechaun movie would be a total blast, wouldn't it?!
In regards to future plans that may actually happen, Mancini opened up about the future of Chucky, telling the audience that if they want more of the ginger-haired Good Guy doll, they need to support the release of Curse of Chucky. Mancini seems primed and ready to continue the franchise, and it's all up to how well this next installment does.
So get out there and pick up Curse of Chucky when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on October 8th!
Written and directed by Mancini, Curse of Chucky finds a family imperiled by the murderous doll that launched a generation’s nightmares – determined to finish a job that was started long ago. The film stars Fiona Dourif (The Master, “True Blood”), A Martinez (“Longmire,” “General Hospital”), Danielle Bisutti (Get Smart, “CSI: Miami”) and Brennan Elliott (“Flight 93,” Double Jeopardy), with Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings) once again providing the voice of Chucky, the homicidal plaything inhabited by the spirit of notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray.
