Image Gallery and Mini-Review of Vox Lumiere’s The Phantom of the Opera

Vox Lumiere's The Phantom of the OperaLon Chaney rocks out as this incredibly inventive rock opera experience brings sound to his seminal silent film. Now playing in Los Angeles, CA, Vox Lumiere brings The Phantom of the Opera to three-dimensional, high-decibel life, offering a funky new take on a cinematic classic.

The innovative production blends the beautifully lensed old movie, edgy new songs, and powerful live performances into a spectacle that’s akin to a cross between a midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast, a Meat Loaf music video, and Repo! The Genetic Opera.

The whole cast is fab, but star performers James Lynch (as The Phantom), and Marisa Johnson (as Christine) shine in their leather and lace attire, and each has attitude to burn. With skeletal metal apparatuses akin to something Bob Fosse would have presented, not the mention a triptych of huge movie screens, the stage commands 100% of one’s attention for 90 full minutes. Original songs (“Party Like It’s 1899” is a crowd-pleaser) and elaborate dance numbers (every move from ballet to breakin’) accompany the silent film (projected in black and white and color tint).

The Vox Lumiere production company began in 2000 with singers and dancers using the classic silent sci-fi film Metropolis as its backdrop – creator Kevin Saunders Hayes, 14 years on, is still deeply involved with production, and his passion shows. It’s a top-notch immersive, multimedia steampunk dunk into another world. Highly recommended.
