MassIFF 2013 Spotlights Women of Horror, Asian Cinema, and The Lords of SalemWith the legends of Salem being a big part of the state’s history, is it any wonder the Massachusetts Independent Film Festival chose The Lords of Salem for a special screening? But that’s just the tip of the iceberg…

MassIFF 2013 opens THIS WEEK on Wednesday, August 14, at the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and continues August 16 and 17 at the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge. MassIFF will once again showcase the best independent cinema and movie talent as filmmakers, actors, producers, and other industry professionals from New England and around the world gather for this exciting annual film experience.

MassIFF gathers the creative force that exists outside of mainstream film and provides the venue to screen these works and promote interaction with a broad audience, fueling the passion for true independent film. This year’s festival will feature two exciting film blocks, one showcasing women in the horror film genre and another showing some of the best Asian cinema. Other highlights of the three-day festival are feature length, short, and documentary films representing both regional and international filmmakers. After each film block screening, film-goers can stay for a question and answer period with some of the filmmakers.

Tickets are on sale now online here and at the door each night of the festival. Tickets are available by film block or as full festival pass for all screenings.

In addition, a special midnight screening of Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem is taking place Friday, August 16, at the Brattle Theatre. Izzy Lee’s fantastic short film Legitimate will open the show. Tickets for that event are on sale online here.

The selection process is demanding, and only a small percentage of the submitted films are selected for screening. The MassIFF “Best of the Festival” awards are selected by a panel of judges that include well known Boston film critic Peter Keough; Dean Treadway of the Movie Geeks United podcast; and horror filmmaker Skip Shea. MassIFF invites festival-goers to the closing celebration on the final day of the festival, Sunday, August 17, at 9 p.m. at Park Restaurant, 59 JFK St., Cambridge.
