Exclusive: David Markland Talks ScareLA

Exclusive: David Markland Talks ScareLAIn anticipation of this coming weekend's Los Angeles haunt convention ScareLA, we chatted with co-creator and CreepyLA head David Markland, who dished on the event. Read on!

"The inspiration for ScareLA came from wanting to find a way to showcase everything awesome Los Angeles has to offer Halloween," Markland stated of the two day convention, which takes place August 10 & 11 at 1933 S. "My site, CreepyLA, attempts to do this online, but I really wanted to see a national haunt convention come to Los Angeles. When I mentioned this to (co-creator) Lora Ivanova, who had worked with HauntCon in the past, she said that with our combined talents and networks we should do this on our own. I immediately agreed."

"From there, we had no desire to replicate what a haunt convention was," continued Markland. "We really wanted to make an event that was for Halloween fans and enthusiasts, and not just professionals. I set out to make the convention I've always wanted to attend. More importantly, it's the event I've always wanted to work on, as ScareLA has allowed us to collaborate with a huge team of passionate, creative people just as excited to create something for Halloween junkies to visit as we are."

Added Ivanova, "At ScareLA we believe everybody is a haunter and a monster and a Halloween fan. We believe L.A. truly is the epicenter of the scare industry and are thrilled to showcase the incredible talent, passion and creativity of Southern California. ScareLA captures the mighty dark side of the Sunshine State to kick off Halloween 2013 with a bang, or a boo!"

Hosting L.A.'s haunt entertainment professionals, ScareLA will feature top attraction designers and operators, manufacturers, artists, filmmakers and more, and will showcase the Halloween season's many upcoming haunt attractions via haunt booths (expect the presence of Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights, Blumhouse of Horrors, Knott’s Halloween Haunt, Chambers of the Mausoleum, Haunted Play “Delusion,” Los Angeles Haunted Hayride, Reign of Terror Haunted House, The Great Horror Campout, The House at Haunted Hill and Blackout Haunted House), workshops, classes, industry panels, haunt tours, screenings and more.
