Mick Garris is responsible for an entire generation’s introduction to Stephen King. Personally, I was acclimated toward King with Garris’ filmography. Before I was ready for the austerity of Kubrick’s The Shining or the sheer trauma of Brian De Palma’s Carrie, my mom fed me morsels of King by way of Mick Garris.

I watched Sleepwalkers a dozen times, fearing my friends and neighbors were scary cat people because of it. His adaptation of The Shining is more faithful than Kubrick’s version and worth seeking out in its own right. And, of course, Riding the Bullet meant a great deal to me (and I had the privilege of chatting with him about it here). Plus, his adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand is a favorite among many, so it comes as no surprise that it’s presently the third most streamed show on Apple TV.

Per Apple TV: King’s epic novel tells a story of a virus that escapes from a top-secret lab causing millions of deaths around the country.

Garris’ four-episode adaptation of one of King’s most famous novels is as faithful to the source material as they come. It doesn’t hurt that it stars a veritable grab-bag of noteworthy, 1990s faces too, including Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan, and Rob Lowe. At the time, The Stand was both a critical and commercial success. It was nominated for six Emmy awards and drew an estimated 19 million viewers during its original, four-night run back in 1994.

Fans have been no less excited to revisit Mick Garris’ adaptation of Stephen King’s classic. They’ve taken to Twitter to share their thoughts. Check out some choice reactions below:

Stephen King remains the king of horror. Nearly 30 years after release, The Stand is still, well, making a mighty stand on streaming.
