Warners Plays Some Funny Games

Warner Independent scoops up Funny Games remakeHow weird is this; I was just discussing the remake of Funny Games over the weekend with some people during the set visit I was on, wondering who was going to be handling getting it out there, and suddenly Variety has the word. I guess when I talk, people listen. Or something.

Warner Independent have nabbed the multi-territory distribution rights to Michael Haneke’s English-language remake of his 1997 film, which stars Naomi Watts (yum) in a tale about two very disturbed individuals who get joy from torture, rape, and mutilation, taking a family hostage during their vacation. From all accounts the original is very disturbing and I can’t wait to see how much is kept for the remake, especially considering the star quality of Watts.

Warner Independent will release Funny Games in France, Spain, Australia, and the U.S., though of course no solid date has been set. Haneke’s last film, Cache, did very well for Sony Pictures Classics in a limited release, and I’m sure the name actress and twisted storyline will guarantee success for Warners.
