Warm Bodies Anything But Cold at the Box Office

Warm Bodies Anything But Cold at the Box OfficeIt was a good weekend for young zombies with Warm Bodies, less so for new movies featuring actors with one foot in the grave (Stallone, Pacino, Walken). Meanwhile fairy tale monster slayers prove they have more life in them than Leatherface.

The tweener romantic zombedy Warm Bodies breathed life into the Super Bowl weekend box office with $20 million. It’s also received pretty solid reviews and a “B+” Cinemascore so its long-term prospects look good. Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate may have their new youthful franchise to fill the Twilight void.

In somewhat of a surprise, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters did not suffer the sort of box office freefall that befell Texas Chainsaw 3D a few weeks back. Despite middling reviews for the film, the fairy tale witch slayers only dropped 52% - about on par for a second week genre flick - landing in second place with another $9.2 million. That puts it at around $34 million. Box Office Mojo reports it has now outgrossed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Mama continues to hold strong in fourth place with $6.7 million. Its $58.3 million tally thus far makes it the highest grossing non-Twilight horror movie since Paranormal Activity 3.

Now for the part that makes Matt Fini sad. Bullet to the Head opened to a terrible $4.5 million. That’s lower than Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand two weeks ago and the lowest opening for a Sylvester Stallone movie since 1981’s Night Hawks. It could just be that the audience isn’t there for geezers playing badasses seeing as how the new Al Pacino/Christopher Walken crime drama Stand Up Guy didn’t even crack the top 15.

Nothing new for horror fans until Valentine’s Day, when Warner Brothers opens the most blatantly transparent stab at staking claim to tween girls suffering from Twilight withdrawal (i.e., Beautiful Creatures). Will it be a breakout hit, or could it be a good day for Twilight wannabes to die hard at the box office?

The last thing I want to see is action movies starring a couple of old geezers making jokes about how old they are, just like the last thing I want to see is touchy feely PG-13 zombie movies. Ugh.

Seriously? I call bullshit on society. How do these two action stars bomb when the expendables is a successful franchise? And for the record, the Last Stand is better than Bullet to the Head, which is pretty unsatisfying.
