Romanek Off Wolfman

Romanek on board Wolf Man remake!Wow, this is unexpected; Mark Romanek (pictured, One Hour Photo) has left Universal’s long-anticipated remake of The Wolfman, which was ramping up production for the last few weeks.

The news comes our way via Deadline Hollywood, who apparently spoke to some insiders and found out that the $100 million (!) Uni had allocated for the redux just wasn’t enough to work with. Whoa. “He’s a purist, an artiste, an exquisite craftsman,” the insider reported, ”but he just had a budget schedule he couldn’t accommodate,”

So now the mad rush is on to get a new ass to fill the director’s chair, and boy do we have a list I’m sure the studio wouldn’t even look twice at. I really want to know what’s planned with this film that Romanek couldn’t stretch that paltry $100 million to make it work. Kinda makes you ill, no?

I was intrigued by Romanek directing this, but was never a huge fan of One Hour Photo (beyond the cool visuals)… I was more intrigued by Walker writing it and Benicio starring. This is unfortunate, but frankly if they can bring in another good director from the music video world (Jonathan Glazer, Chris Cunningham or someone like that) then I think it could still be pretty cool. One suggestion I read (on the Aint it Cool talkback, so there’s NO validity to it, but still…) was Cronenberg, which I think would be amazing
