Sinister Gets Taken at the Box Office by Argo

Audiences were still Taken with Liam Neeson for the second weekend in a row, and a movie about how a fake movie saved lives took second. Both nearly fell victim to a new horror movie about a writer encountering evil lurking within some Sinister home movies.
Box Office Mojo tabulates Taken 2 and Argo topping the weekend box office with $22.5 and $20.1 million, respectively. Coming in a close third with $18.25 million was Scott Derrickson’s hotly anticipated Sinister. That’s the good news. The bad news is the film only received a “C+” Cinemascore, which does not bode well for its prospects in the weeks to come, especially next weekend when it goes ghost-to-ghost with the Paranormal Activity juggernaut.
Who the hell are these people CinemaScore polls, and why is it they never seem happy with any halfway decent horror movies?
Hotel Transylvania continues to make money fang over fist with another $17.1 million, 4th place finish. Sony’s computer animated monster movie has now passed the $100 million mark.
Frankenweenie won’t even make half as much as Hotel Transylvania the way things are going. The Tim Burton animated monster movie fell to 7th place in week two with $7 million. $22 Million is all it has managed to muster thus far in its failed box office run.
Though not a horror movie, Seven Psychopaths does boast more psychotics in its cast than any of the horror movies opening this month, and you simply cannot ignore any film that makes reference to The Town that Dreaded Sundown. Unfortunately, audiences pretty much ignored it this weekend. Its $4.28 million, 9th place opening garnered the unfortunate distinction of being the lowest nationwide opening ever for a film distributed by CBS Films, who have developed a reputation at this point for mainly putting out box office flops. On the plus side, it still opened better than Atlas Shrugged Episode Two: Attack of the Galts.
Next weekend answers the question as to whether or not audiences are finally growing weary of Paranormal Activity when the fourth installment of the franchise debuts.
