Godzilla vs. Biollante Roaring its Way to Blu-ray

Godzilla’s 1989 smackdown with a giant mutant rosebud that blossoms into a hideous Little Shop of Horrors-esque monstrosity dubbed Biollante has never been released in the US on either DVD or Blu-ray. That changes December 4th when Godzilla vs. Biollante gets a simultaneous release on both formats.

There has been a distinct lack of Godzilla on Blu-ray. With the new Hollywood Godzilla flick announced it stands to reason that’s going to change between now and its 2014 release date. Echo Bridge - working with both Godzilla owners Toho and Miramax (owners of the domestic rights) - look to be getting ahead of the curve with the announcement that they will be releasing Godzilla vs. Biollante on DVD and Blu-ray for the first-time ever for American audiences.

According to Toho Kingdom, the print is expected to be taken from Toho’s pristine Japanese Blu-ray release. That means it will be seen in its original, widescreen aspect ratio with two Japanese audio tracks (2.0 stereo and 5.1 surround) with freshly commissioned English subtitles. For those that hate to read and love bad English dubbing, the Miramax English dub with Australian-sounding accents will be included.

Details of disc extras have not been officially announced just yet but it’s expected there will be a 48-minute “making of” feature and another 10-minute featurette imported from the Japanese release. In addition, there will be a commentary track by “Japanese Giants” editor Ed Godziszewski, who can be heard on numerous other American releases of Toho monster movies detailing the history and inside stories behind the various films.

Best of all, Echo Bridge’s Godzilla vs. Biollante DVD will retail for $6.99 and the Blu-ray for $14.99 but right now you can pre-order the Blu-ray from Amazon for only $7.99. I already pre-ordered mine.

Maybe not this time.

"The Blu-Ray will be released on a BD50: a dual layer, 50GB disc. While Echo Bridge has been known for quick releases in the past, Godzilla vs. Biollante is turning out to be an exception with amble time being spent on the creation of both discs. "
