Short List Revealed to Helm Dawn of the Planet of the ApesWith Rupert Wyatt leaving the director’s chair for Fox’s sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, all eyes have been on the studio to come up with a worthy replacement. Deadline is reporting a short list of directors, and you can read on to find out whom Fox has in mind.

The site revealed that Cloverfield’s Matt Reeves is atop the list, along with The Disappearance of Alice Creed helmer J Blakeson, 28 Weeks Later helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Take Shelter and Mud director Jeff Nichols, Pacific Rim helmer Guillermo del Toro, The Impossible helmer Juan Antonio Bayona, and Looper helmer Rian Johnson (whose reps deny he is in the hunt).

Twentieth Century Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will possibly infect theaters on May 23, 2014. In it Andy Serkis reprises his role as the ape “Caesar”.

Amanda Silver, Rick Jaffa, Scott Burns penned the screenplay that “continues the story set forth in last year’s critical and commercial hit movie featuring simians that are given human intelligence and subsequently break out of their facility. At the same time a virus breaks out that causes the collapse of human society. The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.
