Summit and Lionsgate Counting Down to Child 44
Sometimes reality is far more horrifying than anything that a filmmaker or writer can conjure up. Such is the case with Andrei Chikatilo. While the name may not jump out at you, believe us when we say he was one of the most evil and thoroughly crazy men to walk the earth.
According to Deadline, Summit/Lionsgate is moving fast on Child 44 and is in early talks with Safe House director Daniel Espinosa to helm an adaptation of the Tom Rob Smith novel that has been adapted by Richard Price.
The story follows Leo Demidov, a disgraced lawman in Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union, who is assigned to investigate a series of gruesome child murders. The book is based on the Rostov Ripper, the Ukrainian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, who was executed for 52 murders and was enabled by the institutional denial that existed in Soviet political culture at the time.
Though the film has not yet been greenlit, production is supposed to commence early next year.
