San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Looper Press Conference with Director Rian Johnson, Stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt
Seven years ago writer/director Rian Johnson took the indie film world by storm with his thriller Brick, which followed a teen named Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who was in search of his ex-girlfriend's killer.
What made that film so cool was the 1930's noir spin Johnson laid on it.
Now, both Johnson and Gordon-Levitt have reunited on the filmmaker's latest, Looper, which has Johnson putting his own twist on the time travel subgenre and also stars Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Piper Perabo, Paul Dano and Noah Segan.
During the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, Dread Central was on hand for the Looper press conference featuring Johnson, Gordon-Levitt and Blunt chatting about what looks to be one of the best sci-fi flicks of the year. The trio discussed their thoughts on the project, talked more about their characters and gave us a lot of insight on what we can expect from Looper when it arrives in theaters on September 28th.
Also during the press conference Gordon-Levitt, who has been enjoying quite the career over the last few years with roles in films like Inception, 50/50, (500) Days of Summer, GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, The Dark Knight Rises and one of this writer's favorite recent indie dramas, Hesher , reflected on the days when no one wanted to "hire the kid from 'Third Rock from the Sun'", and said:
"You know, when I first finished doing 'Third Rock from the Sun' and wanted to do movies, no one wanted to put me in movies, which is understandable enough because it might be distracting to have the kid from 'Third Rock from the Sun' in your movie. But there are three movies and three directors that I feel like I owe a lot to for taking a chance and giving me an opportunity when I was trying to make that transition- they are Jordan Melamed, who did Manic; Gregg Araki, who made Mysterious Skin and Rian, who made Brick."
"I think those are the movies that then when other filmmakers began to see them, they thought. 'Okay, maybe he's not only the kid from "Third Rock from the Sun'.' That's how it all really started."
Gordon-Levitt also went on to discuss how he prepared for his upcoming directorial debut, Don Jon's Addiction, "I just finished a movie that I also wrote called Don Jon's Addiction that we just finished shooting about two weeks ago. I do think that having a 2011 where I worked with Rian, Chris Nolan and then Steven Spielberg that I really couldn't ask for a better year leading up to directing a movie for the first time than what I had in 2011. I really do think those three guys have a lot in common, and of course Rian is less-known at this point than Chris or Steven, but I do think that when all is said and done, they will be three directors who will end being regarded in a somewhat similar fashion."
