Any time we hear John Carpenter’s name attached to a project, we get excited. But when he’s linked to something as cool as the story of the Darkchylde comic book series, we sit up and really take notice. Here’s the latest info on the project.

Darkchylde is, of course, the story of Ariel Chylde, a teenage girl who has the power to turn herself into the nightmare creatures of her dreams. She is in a constant battle to protect her small town from the beasties she’s set free. Yep, that sounds like a story the great John Carpenter can really get behind.

What we’ve known thus far about the film is that Darkchylde creator Randy Queen is personally working on the script and Weta Workshop is helping to bring the nightmarish tale of Ariel Chylde to the silver screen. New information has just become available from Sandy King, the lovely wife of John Carpenter and the horror legend’s producing partner.

According to Ms. King in a recent interview with Daily Grindhouse, Weta (famous for their stellar work on little films like The Lord of the Rings, Avatar and The Avengers) is currently developing the creature concepts for Darkchylde, and also toiling away on the project is Illusion Industries (Watchmen, GI Joe: Retaliation). Illusion has been charged with developing the design for Ariel. The visual F/X branch of Peerless is currently working on the manifestations. These are cool parts of the film to be involved with for sure, but Ms. King stressed all the creature effects will be practical with CG enhancements. Sounds like they’ve got all the bases covered here.

As for who will be taking on the role of Ariel Chylde…early rumors have named Chloë Moretz, Elizabeth Olsen and Elle Fanning as possible suitors for the part.

Look for lots more on this extremely intriguing project as it becomes available.
