New Starship Troopers Light on the Red Stuff

If the original and still very much insane Starship Troopers was known for anything at all, it would be for its maniacal moments of free-flowing gore. As for the upcoming remake... not so much. Here's your chance to find out why.

The original Starship Troopers was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who also directed RoboCop and Total Recall. Both of those films are being remade as we type. Producer Toby Jaffe (Starship Troopers, Total Recall remakes) sat down with Empire and let them know why making notoriously violent and campy flicks just isn't feasible for bigger budget movies.

"The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent. With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way. Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein's 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book and ground it a little more ... Working in a visual-effects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits [armored exoskeletons from Heinlein's novel], for example, which I don't think they could have done before."

Do you want to know more?

Um, no. Not really. Sigh.

Oh, so this one will be unironically fascistic? Can't wait.

"The more expensive a film is, the more important it becomes to make a larger profit. With Recall in particular, we made a financial decision to keep it more multiplex friendly like Minority Report. It gives the purse string holders, and us as accountants, the opportunity to capitalise on it in a predictable way." - Translation from the original marketingese into english courtesy of Google Translate.

There is room for a remake in this case because Verhoeven's film (a personal favorite of mine) is nothing like the book it was based on. The Heinlein novel is about as serious as you can get, with not a tiny bit of satire anywhere in sight. I also don't recall any gratuitous nudity or gore from it, which figures for a book written in 1959. Of course, if the remake boils down to just being a PG-13 version of the Verhoeven film with crappy effects (the original's FX work holds up remarkably well in my opinion) I'll ignore it just like all the other remakes coming out. Still, at the very least it has to be better than the 6 part anime adaptation they made in Japan in 1988 and that deservedly almost nobody knows about these days, right?

"Working in a visual-effects renaissance as we are," Translation: We can computer animate EVERYTHING including any blood we do use and even though it will all look like a crappy video game we DON'T CARE BECAUSE IT'S CHEAP TO DO!

Verhoeven had his own subversive voice and style. The remakes look to strip away anything unique about the concepts and makes them as dull and dimensionless as possible.

Judging how bland the trailer for the Recall remake was. I can only imagine how much this remake is going to suck.
