Peter Weir Enters The Keep

A couple of years ago(!) we reported that Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) was attached to direct The Keep, Ehren Kruger's (The Ring, Skeleton Key) adaptation of Jennifer Egan's novella. Time passed. Things change.

Variety is now reporting that Peter Weir (The Truman Show, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World ) is attached to direct the contemporary gothic thriller The Keep, adapting Jennifer Egan's 2006 bestseller in a film set in a mysterious medieval castle somewhere in Central Europe.

The flick is set up at Said Ben Said's Paris-based production-sales outfit SBS Productions and begins shooting next spring.

Described by one observer as The Ring meets Inception dig on the plot crunch below and look for more soon!

Synopsis
"Two cousins, irreversibly damaged by a childhood prank whose devastating consequences changed both their lives, reunite twenty years later to renovate a medieval castle in Eastern Europe, a castle steeped in blood lore and family pride. Built over a secret system of caves and tunnels, the castle and its violent history invoke and subvert all the elements of a Gothic past: twins, a pool, an old baroness, a fearsome tower. In an environment of extreme paranoia, cut off from the outside world, the men reenact the signal event of their youth, with even more catastrophic results. And as the full horror of their predicament unfolds, a prisoner, in jail for an unnamed crime, recounts an unforgettable story — a story about two cousins who unite to renovate a castle — that brings the crimes of the past and present into piercing relation."

Meh. 'Tis F. Paul Wilson's Keep or nothin' for me.

Reading that description, I think I'd even rather watch Michael Mann's bizarro film adaption of Wilson's novel than this...whatever it turns out to be.

But F. Paul Wilson wrote The Keep long ago. What's that? The woman isn't creative enough to come up with a different title? Okay then.
