Images From Neill Blomkamp's Chappie Hit Comic-ConOne of the coolest things we’ve done at this year’s Comic-Con was head over to Legendary’s booth to check out their two must-see displays: an Oculus Rift-driven Pacific Rim Jaeger pilot sim and a mini Crimson Peak set that came with a guided tour by Guillermo del Toro himself!

First up was Pacific Rim… Guys, if you can spare some time this crazy weekend to head over and check out this video game tech build on the Oculus Rift, you need to. Describing it will not do it justice, and the experience is so undeniable cool that you’ll want to do it again and again.

The Oculus Rift technology is probably the most crazy and immersive thing we’ve ever seen. Add in some giant Robot vs. Kaiju action, and you have what can only be described as a monster fan’s wet dream! Wow.

From there we spoke with del Toro about Crimson Peak, and he peeled back a few layers of what is no doubt going to be a very spooky Gothic horror experience right down to the house itself, which is home to little details you may not see your first time through. “One of the themes in the movies is butterflies vs. moths,” says Guillermo, pointing to the unique wallpaper within the house. “If you look closely, you can even see some writing,” del Toro tells us while grinning from ear to ear. Sure enough, upon close inspection the word “FEAR” is spelled out very subtly on the printed paper. Very cool.

“What I’m doing with the house is creating sort of an iron maiden trap. This structure literally traps the people who are inside of it. I paid a HUGE amount of detail to this one as Crimson Peak is the first time that I got to combine sort of the fairy tale/Gothic look of my European movies with my American work. I’m in a position now that I can trust myself to do both.”

From there del Toro pointed us toward a couple of the costumes that were on display sandwiched in among an amazing array of props. “Moths and butterflies are a very prevalent theme throughout the movie. As you can see, they’re everywhere in the props and even in the dresses. The two dresses I’ve chosen to display here were picked by the degree of craftsmanship in each. These are made from very authentic types of fabrics and lace. There are motifs in them that are pertinent to the storytelling. We pleated the fabrics exactly as they would have been a century ago. This helps to give the feel of things a dreamlike, fairy tale quality.

“This is mainly a hardcore horror Gothic romance film so with the romance you’ll also have elements of the supernatural, elements of a thriller, and the ghosts… they’re really scary, but the humans in this film are far scarier than the ghosts,” del Toro says with a laugh. “Let’s put it this way… things do not end well for the humans in the movie,” says Guillermo before pointing to an enormous and bloodied meat cleaver and a boning knife which is used specifically to separate flesh from bone. “Both weapons you see here have very prominent roles in the film.

Even cooler? We’re not going to have to wait long to see the spectres show up. “You’ll see the ghosts in the first few minutes of Crimson Peak and throughout the film. There’s many different ones. This isn’t really a haunted house movie or even a ghost story though. One of my main passions in life is to read anything horror related omnivorously. Amongst everything that I’ve read, the Gothic romances have really captured my imagination. Jane Eyre… Great Expectations… whatever you’re talking about, Crimson Peak captures that big sweeping romantic – but ultimately gloomy and scary – feel. It’s not an action horror movie, but it is damned scary.
