El Rey Announces More Installments of The Director's Chair and Production Start Date for From Dusk Till Dawn Season 2During a recent presentation to TV critics, El Rey announced premiere dates for new installments of “The Director’s Chair” as well as when production kicks off on Season Two of “From Dusk Till Dawn.”

From the Press Release:
El Rey Network plans to debut two new and exciting installments of “El Rey Network Presents: The Director’s Chair,” a series of hour-long specials featuring the industry’s most notable directors engaging in a revealing and unexpected exchange about the world of filmmaking.

Premiering Wednesday, July 30th, at 9 PM ET/PT, El Rey Network Founder and Chairman Robert Rodriguez sits down with longtime friend and Oscar nominated director Guillermo del Toro to discuss his journey from artist to director/producer. From groundbreaking Pan’s Labyrinth to Hellboy to Pacific Rim to his upcoming series “The Strain,” Del Toro reveals the madness behind his monsters.

In August, Rodriguez explores the world of cinema with frequent collaborator Quentin Tarantino. Airing in two installments (Vol. 1 premieres Wednesday, August 13, at 9 PM ET/PT; Vol. 2 on Wednesday, August 27, at 9 PM ET/PT), the two discuss Tarantino’s film career through the lens of their 20-year friendship, using never-before-seen personal footage to discuss topics from screenwriting and camera placement to Spaghetti Westerns and Kung Fu.

Rodriguez said: “These are engaging conversations that shed light on the minds of today’s greatest filmmakers. Both Guillermo and Quentin have a deep and abiding love of cinema, and that made our dialogue both revealing and entertaining. It is a privilege to have a forum like ‘The Director’s Chair’ to share our passion and give viewers an inside look at the creative process.”

“El Rey Network Presents: The Director’s Chair” is produced by Troublemaker Studios and Skip Film in association with FactoryMade Ventures. Executive producers are Robert Rodriguez, Skip Chaisson, John Fogelman, and Cristina Patwa.

El Rey Announces More Installments of The Director's Chair and Production Start Date for From Dusk Till Dawn Season 2In addition, the sophomore season of Robert Rodriguez’s “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,” the network’s first scripted drama, will start production in Austin (home to Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios) beginning October 2014.

Returning are all the leading cast members including Wilmer Valderrama, D.J. Cotrona, Zane Holtz, and Eiza Gonzalez. Season Two will be comprised of 13 hour-long episodes (three additional as compared to Season One), allowing fans to sink their teeth into a supernatural series described as a “fascinating ride” with “raw nerve and witty dialogue.”

In addition to its berth on El Rey Network, the franchise is available exclusively on Netflix in Canada, the UK, Ireland, the Nordics, the Netherlands, and Latin America with Season One becoming available on the service in the U.S. on August 19. Other international territories where the series is available include Australia, China, and the Middle East.

Scott Sassa, El Rey Network’s Vice Chair, commented on the deal: “Reimagining this franchise for television viewers was the perfect foundation for the launch of El Rey. Our distribution partnerships have allowed us to broaden the reach of this anchor series and give fans the perfect opportunity to catch up before Season Two hits the air next year.”

Rodriguez added: “Being able to revisit the world of ‘Dusk’ and expand on the story and characters from the film was incredibly gratifying, and I am thrilled that our fans across the globe will have the opportunity to experience that world through our relationship with Miramax. I look forward to creating an unexpected and compelling narrative for our characters in Season Two and giving our fans the kind of content they have come to expect from El Rey.”

“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” is an El Rey Network production in association with Rodriguez International Pictures, FactoryMade Ventures, Miramax, and Sugar Cane Entertainment. Executive producers are Robert Rodriguez, Carlos Coto (also showrunner), Diego Gutierrez (also writer), and FactoryMade Ventures and El Rey Network co-founders John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa.

Which Monsters May Be Making Their TV Debut in Junji Ito Collection?

Published

on

Studio Deen’s highly-anticipated anime anthology Junji Ito Collection has been building buzz, especially since its new teaser dropped weeks ago. Eagle-eyed fans who are well-acquainted with horror mangaka Junji Ito’s body of work will spot some familiar faces in the new trailer, brought to the small screen by showrunner Shinobu Tagashira.

So, who among Ito’s famous menagerie of monsters may be making an appearance in the show when it airs next year?

Oshikiri Toru

Oshikiri is the morally-questionable highschooler who begins to question his perception of reality in Hallucinations, a series of some loosely connected one-shots. Oshikiri’s a little on the short side, with an even shorter fuse. One thing he’s not short on is moneyas evidenced by his impressive, albeit creepy, mansion. We’ve yet to see which of his adventureswhich range from murder to parallel dimensionswill be his television debut.

Yuuko

The once-chatty Yuuko falls ill and sees her worst fears come to pass in Slug Girl, the famous one-shot whose brand of body horror is sure to feel like a distant cousin (or maybe a predecessor?) to Uzumaki‘s “The Snail” chapter. It offers little in the way of answers but is best enjoyed in all its bizarre glory.

The Intersection Bishounen

In Lovesick Dead, one of Ito’s longer standalone stories, an urban legend causes a rash of suicides when young girls begin to call upon a mysterious, black-clad spirit called the Intersection Bishounen. The custom catches on quickly among teenagers, out late and eager for him to tell them their fortune in life and love, since his advice is to die for. Literally.

Souichi Tsujii

A long-running recurring character in Ito’s manga (probably second only to Tomie herself), you’ll know Souichi by the nails he sucks on or sticks out of his moutha strange habit borne out of an iron deficiency. He’s an impish kid whose fascination with the supernatural makes him the odd man out in an otherwise normal family. The morbid pranks he likes to playfunny only to him—don’t do much to endear him to his peers or relatives, either.

Fuchi

The titular character in Fashion Model, Fuchi works as a professional model for her, shall we say, unique look and Amazonian stature. When she and another actress are hired by a crew of indie filmmakers, Fuchi shows them that she doesn’t like sharing the limelight. She also makes a cameo in a couple of Souichi’s stories, and in them he finds her genuinely attractive. Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder.
